Spoilers STAR TREK BEYOND

Well, that trailer was...yeah.

I really didn't think that a planet bound action movie was something they'd go with. The only other mostly planet bound Trek movie (ST IV) was one I didn't enjoy nearly as much as most people, but it at least had great characters. This just looks like an excuse to be more like a Michael Bay movie while spending less money on big ship CG. This reminds me of that Voyager episode where bad guys took over the ship and left most of the crew on a planet, except lamer because at least the Voyager wasn't destroyed in that episode. I can't say the idea of a Star Trek movie without the ship is particularly compelling. I thought Pegg would turn out to be a better writer than Orci/Kurtzman, but it looks like he may be one of the few people who is worse then them, which is scary.

After growing to like Into Darkness and hearing Pegg would be writing Beyond, I was cautiously optimistic. Apparently, the universe is now punishing me for that

Soooo...they're following the formula again: 1) World threatening super villian

Maybe?

STMP, ST 09 Earth threatened by world destorying evil villian

2) Khaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

Where?

ST II and STID: Khan
3) Destroy the 1701

Hasn't been destroyed in the previous 2 yet?

Damaged, and refitted. The trailer looks like they do a proper job of destroying her this time.

But given how compromised these writers write (2 & 3 combined in STID),

I don't know what you mean here. How "compromised" do Simon Pegg and Doug Jung write?

Meant compressed. They compress down two movies into one.

So, at a guess this "Swarm" has a nice method for bringing down big spaceships. The Dubai city shots we've seen are from early in the movie when an older Starfleet ship manages a crash landing at a starbase. Later, the Enterprise is critically damaged and most of the crew held under guard by Swarm soldiers while the stars avoid capture (Kirk stays with the ship until it hits, of course) and run around the landscape figuring out how to stop Elba's nefarious plot and free their people.

I'd call that spot-on. Well, I would, except I'm not in a position to do so, of course. But I'll be legitimately surprised if this isn't how things go down.

Hell, I'm going to quote you on another site. Credit will be given, of course.

Maybe there's a misunderstanding here. You implied this film was following "a formula" but your citing another film. For instance, where are you getting "Khan" from or a "World destroying villain" in this film?

It's following the pattern, the formula, the sequence, of stories told in the original movies.

I am guessing the scene at the beginning is either from the middle or end of film?

Looks like a lot of fun - looking forward to it.

56 seconds = MSD of their 'new' ship behind Scotty for anyone who wants to grab and blow it up

So what will be the New-new Enterprise look like? (surely going to see one at end of film).

Thanks.

Looking at the trailer again, Kirk doesn't crash-land with the Enterprise - I'd inferred that from earlier leaked footage of him and the tattooed babe climbing out of the bridge window. He actually sees the Enterprise disintegrating from his escape pod.
