What are you reading?

That's the first one and the only one I've read so far. Incredibly prescient given it was written in the early 50s! :)

Yeah, it's a great story! Only wish it had been longer. If anything this is a story I would have liked to see expanded upon in a full novel.

Along the same lines, is one of my favourite stories by Ben Bova, The Dueling Machine. Imagine entering a phonebooth type of thing to enter a world in order to settle disputes between two people, with the idea of not having to get hurt. Only in this story, someone does die due to a malfunction. Or is it? ;)

Well, at the risk of seeming too partisan of one of our own, I've just recently read LadyT'Anna's novella The Adept. It's a very feelingly, delicately, yet powerfully written story of how Spock is able to fully acknowledge and be truly reconciled with the duality of his nature, in the most meaningful way possible. It's well worth your time and attention!!!:techman:

So, I'm currently reading the original trilogy of SW novels. I know I've heard them criticized quite a bit, but I'm quite enjoying them. It's at the very least giving me a new sense of perspective on the movies and stories as a whole.

I recently finished The Rape of Nanking, which is one of the most depressing books I've ever encountered.

Is that the Iris Chang?

It is. I plan on reading her Chinese in America book once I finish this WW2 series. I read that she committed suicide at 35. Very sad, and one reason I always cut soul-harrowing reads with something more uplifting. It's easy to lose all faith in anything after reading about holocausts, rape, and elections.

Right now I'm plodding through The Grid, on the electrical grid. Can you tell I was a SimCity nut?

Yes it definitely could have been expanded into a much larger story.

About halfway through now the that one is still probably the best. Some haven't aged well, I'm sure The Other Foot was quite daring for the time but now...well it was a little wince inducing reading it.

Yeah, I had much the same impression. Some were rather awkward to read and just left me wondering what they were on about. Even the one with all the historical figures and the witches? Couldn't figure out what was going on half the time.

I'm reading The Disposessed by Ursula K. Le Guin. Enjoyable book! I don't know why I haven't read more of her stuff, other than a few short stories.

I haven't got to that one yet, will let you know when I do. The one with the time travellers trying to escape a dictatorial future was quite interesting.

That sounds like something I would enjoy. Though something about this cover seems familiar...

Yeah, looks kind of starwars-y doesn't it? Ironically though, I don't remember any swordfighting in it. But that's just an example of covers that end up not being very indicative of the content.

Oh, it is most certainly an attempt to ape Star Wars, probably from the late 70's or early 80's when it wouldn't be quite so obvious and Lucas not as likely to sue the pants off the publisher.

Actually it predates Star Wars as it was originally published in 1963. But as for that particular cover, looks like it was republished with it in 1984, so yeah, I guess I could see that happening.
