Special guest announced for Christmas (spoilers)

Its a Christmas show, they have EastEnders if they want a show to make them cut their wrists.

It does impact the end of the current series a bit when you know nothing so major can happen that we can't be having comedy hi-jinks three weeks later.

The promo photos for Christmas certainly remove a major possibility for the regeneration in the "Hell Bent" trailer. A few days ago, Rich Johnston asked on Bleeding Cool if we were getting a surprise new Doctor at Christmas. Umm... no, Rich, we're not.

I thought that his theory (not that I give it much stock) is that the next Doctor will appear in the Christmas special but it only becomes clear who he at the end - and the actual regeneration is at end of next year...

Not unless they are pulling a complete fast one or the Christmas special is somehow set before the series finale. It does seem really unlikely though.

Matt Lucus is the next Doctor?! Aghhhh!

The doctor who facebook page has the title as "the husbands of River Song". The word "husband is plural. It could just be a typo. If it is not a typo, it means that River remarries and the christmas special has River and her new husband meeting the Doctor, her other husband?

Interestingly, the River Song audio series coming from Big Finish in January features another husband of hers played by Samuel West.

West was one of those supposedly in contention to play the Twelfth Doctor, IIRC.

Of course, so was Uncle Tom Cobbley, Chris O'Dowd, the man in my local chip shop, etc., etc.

Wait, where'd this pic come from? It's not in either of the released trailers for the finale..?

In any case, cool new (blue) look going here. I was hoping for something more plain and utilitarian to match this incarnation of the Doctor's look, but I'm good with this too. However, I'd been hoping for a return to the swappable heads and/or use of the screwdriver held upright rather than as a magic wand...

I haven't seen this fabled pic of the Doctor and Clara in a Hartnell-esque TARDIS... Link anyone..?

Though I'm guessing they used the partial set from the Doctor Who Museum for the shot (the older console prop was missing when I was there in August, which should have been telling). The most recent trailer shows the Doctor behind the wheel of this TARDIS, and an exterior shot of what looks like a default-mode TT capsule in flight. Interesting.

Would a non-"the" TARDIS TARDIS create a sonic for the Doctor to use? I doubt it. It's not like he owns the patent or anything, but it's always struck me that his screwdriver started out as an actual sonic device for driving screws, which he personally had tinkered with over the course of centuries in its various incarnations. The one he got from the console in "Eleventh Hour" would surely have been a gift the TARDIS itself had made, knowing he'd need one? It's not like it was sitting there when he took the ship for a wonky test flight in that episode, else he'd have noticed it.

^ In A Christmas Carol he warns Teen Kazran about making the same mistakes he did, ie missing opportunities by wasting time inventing a new kind of screwdriver.

As for the TARDIS, recall that in The Day Of The Doctor Ten's TARDIS changed its console room to match Eleven's. Looks like it could be like getting a new phone and inheriting the settings of the old one. I suspect that the police box exterior would follow him if he acquired a new TARDIS; the chassis may be new, but at a "software" level it could be the same entity in a sense.

I miss the dental instrument that Pertwee used to detonate Dalek minefields with :)

Yeah, but the 4th Doctor claimed he met Shakespeare in "City of Death." He even claimed that he wrote one of the first folio copies of Hamlet and that he tried to discourage Shakespeare from mixing metaphors in the "To be or not to be..." speech. And yet, in "The Shakespeare Code," the 10th Doctor acts as if he's never met Shakespeare before.

Rule#1: The Doctor lies.

Ah so the Doctor's back to using a screwdriver? A shame, I think I'm the only one who likes the sunglasses.

What 11 was boning Clara?

Yuck

How is that "yuck"? Sure, there's an age gap of a couple hundred years, but they're both consenting adults, what they do together is their business.

Honestly, I never got the impression they were actually sleeping together, but the Eleventh Doctor and Clara were definitely "more than friends."

Because in the classic series this was clearly a line that they never wanted to approach, or even tip toe next to.. I don't find it a problem but I do find it yuck because that's not what the Doctor is supposed to be like in my humble opinion. He'd be far above fleshly pleasures, especially with humans...

Just my 2cents worth plus inflation.

Yeah. I'm fine with the Doctor flirting. And I think he has had feelings for many of his companions that go beyond simple friendship. But I still don't think it would be romance as we humans would define it. As he said in the 2nd "Meanwhile in the TARDIS" short in Season 5, "I'm not like that. That's not what I'm like."

Has River got a sonic trowel?

I was thinking it was a spatula. Is she cooking for us?

I dunno. This has often been a show that combines comedy & seriousness in different ways. Catherine Tate's hi-jinks provided a contrast to the Doctor still mourning the loss of Rose in "The Runaway Bride." "Voyage of the Damned" combined comedy with a really depressing ending. "The End of Time" was filled with portentousness but still had time for Wilf's elderly friends to perv over the Doctor.

As for the sonic sunglasses, I don't mind them. They look good on Capaldi. But, as a prop, they're much more dull & static than the screwdriver.

I like the look of the new sonic screwdriver. Personally I don't think Eleven and Clara had any kind of sexual relationship but they sure flirted up a storm.
