The Arctic Circle, 1845: Escaping the tyranny under which their people have lived for generations, aliens from a distant planet crash land on Earth’s inhospitable frozen wastes. Surviving the harsh conditions will pose a challenge, but over time the aliens will migrate to more populated areas, with decades passing as they work to conceal their presence from their former oppressors, who continue to hunt them at any cost.
San Francisco, 2283: When a mysterious craft is detected entering the solar system, Admiral James Kirk is dispatched by Starfleet to confront the vessel. He meets with an emissary from the Iramahl, a previously unknown alien race who have come in search of their brothers and sisters thought to have gone missing in this area of space centuries earlier. Having recently thrown off the last chains of subjugation by another species, the Ptaen, they now believe their lost people hold the key to saving their entire race from eventual extinction.
New York, 1970: Roberta Lincoln, young protégé of the mysterious agent Gary Seven, is shocked when she receives the oddest request for help—from the future…

Admiral Jonathan Archer has barely settled in as Starfleet Chief of Staff when new crises demand his attention. The Starfleet task force commanded by Captain Malcolm Reed continues its fight against the deadly Ware technology, but one of the task force ships is captured, its Andorian crew imprisoned by an interstellar Partnership that depends on the Ware for its prosperity. Worse, the Partnership has allied with a renegade Klingon faction, providing it with Ware drone fleets to mount an insurrection against the Klingon Empire. Archer sends Captain T’Pol and Endeavour to assist Reed in his efforts to free the captured officers. But he must also keep his eye on the Klingon border, for factions within the Empire blame Starfleet for provoking the Ware threat and seek to take revenge. Even the skill and dedication of the captains under Archer’s command may not be enough to prevent the outbreak of the Federation’s first war.

Not sure about the second one.

That cover and the blurb gives the impression of it being a war novel and lots of epic ship to ship battles. Given who has written it, I doubt that'll happen.

Doug Drexler consulted me about the cover some months ago, and we picked out a scene from the novel that would make for a good cover. This is along the lines we discussed, although I didn't expect it would be this close-up. But I'm glad to have a cover emphasizing one of Starfleet's Andorian ships, as a companion to the Tower of Babel cover showcasing Endeavour and Pioneer.

I really like this cover art for Elusive Salvation and Enterprise Live by the code. I like the Andorian and Klingon ships close up like that.:techman:

You might be surprised. The main issue I have with combat or war stories is that I don't like writing scenes where the good guys kill people. But that's part of why I wanted to do a 2-book arc featuring a robotic enemy, so that wouldn't be an issue. And with a Klingon civil war brewing, there's more than one faction that doesn't really qualify as good guys.

Let's just say that, in the course of writing this book, I had a lot of conversations with Keith DeCandido about The Klingon Art of War and related subjects.

Few minor things about the Andorian ship:

1) It looks like there's a piece of a Klingon BOP sticking out from under it. It's right about in the middle of the page. What is this thing? Is it a piece of debris that managed to get stuck in the hull? (I'm just hazarding a guess that this is the underside of the ship, as in ENT - when this class first appeared - we never saw anything like this on TOP of it.)

2) The portside wing seems to be missing. It's supposed to be right where "CODE" is on the page.

Wow, those are two of my favorite covers I've seen in a while.
The ES one almost looks a little retro.
I love that LBtC focuses on non-Starfleet ships. Most of the ship covers like that tend to just be that series' hero ship, so it's nice to get something a little bit different this time.

I like both of these covers.

The blurb for Elusive Salvation definitely sold me on that one.

The Enterprise novel was already a guaranteed buy -- based on the quality of the previous volumes in that series by Christopher.

I wonder: is that Andorian ship meant to be same ship from the books whose name means "Enterprise" in the Andorian language? (The actual ship's name escapes me, at the moment)

Not sure what you mean. There is an entire Klingon scout (of the type used by Laneth in "Divergence," I think) in front of the Andorian cruiser around the middle of the page, but no fragment sticking out from under/behind it.

It's not missing. The wings are angled rather than straight. Designer John Eaves was inspired by the angled wings of a WWII seaplane. And a portion of that wing seems to be behind the clouds, although that's taking a bit of poetic license with the scene.

Ahh, but who says this isn't a hero ship? ;)

The name is Vol'Rala. And hey, that would be a good ship to put on the cover of a novel in the Star Trek: Enterprise line, wouldn't it...?

See where the mini-explosion is, on the left edge, about halfway up? The green thing (sticking out from under the Andorian ship's hull) is to the right of that.

Look further right -- there are some bodies of water on the planet below that have a sort of greenish-brown tinge, some sort of silty river delta or something. I suppose that bit of green on the left is the edge of that body of water.

"What's the standing procedure on ship ID markings for Starfleet in this time frame?", I'm wondering. Because Andorian-built or not, Vol'Rala is definitely in the UFP Starfleet right "now"...

@Christopher: never mind, I see it now. You're right, it is a Klingon ship. I couldn't see its other wing, so I thought it was a bit that was attached to the bottom of the Andorian ship.

I believe Uncertain Logic had a couple examples of registrations along the lines of "NCC-AGC-##" or something like that.

I believe you're right. Wondering where on the hull the name and registry would end up, though...

I suggested to Doug that he reskin (or whatever) the cruiser model in Starfleet colors, but I guess he chose not to. Then again, any hull markings would probably be in Andorii script anyway.

And Kumari-class ships have a registry of the form AGC-7-##, with AGC standing for "Andorian Guard Cruiser" (or "Andorian Guard Courier" for the Ilthirin class, which is AGC-11-##). For instance, Vol'Rala is AGC-7-10.
