Will You Pay for Star Trek?

Will You Pay for CBS All Access to Watch Star Trek?

Since a lot of the 'no' votes are likely lies this isn't looking too bad.

Don't like what people are saying, therefore just assume they're lying. Seems legit.

Definitely, if you had asked me a month ago that the cost of getting Star Trek back onto TV is $5.99 I would have said shut up and take my money. I just don't understand people saying I'll pay Netflix but not CBS out of principal, this way it directly goes to the people making the show.

I already have a streaming service that I like with a huge backlog of stuff to watch. I'm not going to sign up for another streaming service just to watch 1 show, even if it is Star Trek. Star Trek is not the be all and end all of my fandom. In fact, especially because it's Star Trek, I'm fairly certain that it will eventually be released in other ways that will be significantly more convenient and maybe even cheaper. My position is probably moot, I guess - I haven't checked, but I assume the CBS thing is US-only, therefore the show will be released some other way here (hopefully Netflix, since that would be most convenient). But if I'm wrong about that, then I still won't be paying for all access.

Anyone who says no, is kidding themselves. Ultimatly, you will pay. Even if you illegally download it, you're paying for your internet connection and the computer you're using to download.

So yeah, everyone is paying for everything in some way or another. The illusion is thinking you're not.

Of course anyone who watches the show will pay something (unless they only watch it in other people's houses which they got to by bumming a ride). The point is whether or not they will pay for CBS All Access. Some people, apparently, will not.
International partners have been found for CBS to broadcast to for Star Trek. All Access is for the US audience, it seems, at least from what I have read.

Yes I will I think they are smart for doing it this way this way we don't have to worry about ratings I wish there was a like feature on here for posts lol

I have Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime TV. I can watch shows from ABC, NBC, Fox and CW on Hulu, CBS Doesn't want to play with them. When I have watched a few CBS shows on their free streaming site it was awful, choppy glitchy difficult to navigate. I'm not going to pay for another service especially if their free site is an indication of the paid site.

It's $6. It's basically the same price you pay for renting a new movie in HD off Amazon or Xfinity. It's a total no-brainier as far as I'm concerned. I do t really know what the hesitation is. If it's a "matter of principle," well...ok. If it's a matter of affordability, dig some change out of your glove compartment, give up eating at McDonalds once a month, or turn out your lights when you're not using them.

My guess is that for most, it's the typical Trek fan stubbornness that makes them say "no."

Voted no. The price isn't bad, assuming you can enjoy four episodes per month and can cancel after you've seen them all. But I haven't heard anything about this project that suggests I will enjoy it. All I know is it's called "Star Trek" and some guy associated with the remakes is an EP. I have no problem paying for episodic TV, and regularly buy first-run episodes from Amazon, but only after a series has established itself and I know what I'm getting, and feel invested in it.

Ultimately the equivalent of "ratings" will matter. CBS isn't going to continue to produce a show that isn't drawing enough viewers.

On the OP's question, the pilot that CBS is going to (as I understand it) show for free on the network will be a prime determining factor, also previews, interviews and general internet buzz.

Of course I will pay. I'm posting on Trekbbs!

That doesn't mean it won't be kid-friendly like say Supergirl. But that won't keep kid-absent households around.

I am hopeful that the need to charge and to keep customers willing to pay will force them to do a quality show. Force - because if the show doesn't work, cancel we will go and there will be instant feedback.

So hopefully it will blend some of the best of current TV (serialized, serious situations) into Trek. "Trekking Bad" anyone?

But I haven't heard anything about this project that suggests I will enjoy it.

We really haven't heard anything at all about the project.
Right. Knowing little to nothing about the project, I will not commit to spending anything on it. I am leaning toward sitting out the first season, because I never purchase (or rent) first-run episodes of the first season of a new show. Others, with the same amount of information, consider it patently obvious that of course they will purchase it, because it's Star Trek. I don't think Star Trek's recent record warrants that kind of faith.

I think that's the key point. Recent track record suggests that it's way more likely this show is going to be terrible and/or boring. Hopefully I'm wrong...but I'm not going to subscribe to another streaming service to find out. For now.

I won't be paying. All-Access isn't available outside the US, and since I live in Ireland, we should be getting it first-run on cable TV.

If that's not the case, then, well, I'll have to resort to... you know what...

Personally I'm already paying for CBS All Access to watch back seasons of Survivor, and I like Trek way better than Survivor, so it's a hell yeah there for me.

For the general question, will I pay for Trek. Yes, but having to pay makes the standards higher. If it's not somewhere at least near TOS/TNG/DS9 level in quality, I would not keep paying for it. Whereas if it were free it'd only need to be Voyager level to keep me watching. But I will give it at least a season's chance before making that determination.

Yes, at the moment people are voting on nothing more than a vague notion of a show made in the distant future. Once we learn who the actors are, and start getting pics of uniforms, props and sets, interest will rise.

What would that be....theft?
