Haven't been following much of this movie's production until now. Has there been any leaks regarding Idris Elba's character, in regards to his race or looks? What do we know about him?
Also, is there any legitimacy to the trailer being attached to The Force Awakens, or is it just pure speculation? I'd love to see it with Star Wars, it'd get a lot of attention that way.

I'm pretty sure it's all speculation at this point.
Though it may well be a real Dutch surname, it's just as likely to me that it could be a fake name. Actors with SAG do that kind of stuff all the time with independent films - some of the actors in the original Evil Dead, for example.
Generally when actors adopt stage names, though, they adopt less unusual-sounding ones.
IMDB also lists Joseph Gatt and it's already been confirmed that he's not in the movie.
I guess that means Elba is going to be a alien.
Maybe he's a Gorn.
I wonder if he'll be in whiteface like Sofia Boutella.

No, that would be Vava Vroom.
I'd say that sounds like a reasonable guess. While the majority of the people we saw in Starfleet uniforms and/or alien makeup were undoubtedly extras, it makes some sense that a handful would get parts with a few lines to read.
