MTV's The Shannara Chronicles-Starring John Rhys-Davies, Manu Bennett

Re: MTV's The Shannara Chronicles-Starring John Rhys-Davies, Manu Benn

Do you mean "Shan-ARE-A" vs "SHA-nar-a"?

Personally, I'd always pronounced closer to the first, more like "Shan-NAR-rah"

Re: MTV's The Shannara Chronicles-Starring John Rhys-Davies, Manu Benn

As an aside, BTW, everyone has completely changed the pronunciation of the name Shannara, which was supposed to be pronounced "SHAN-ARE-A" rather than "SHA-NAR-A".

I can't tell what difference you mean to convey by those phonetic spellings. They seem almost the same, since you've used all caps throughout.

You can't see the emphasis differences?

Brooks' official pronunciation renders the name as "Shan-"Are"-A" rather than the unofficial "Sha"-Nar"-"A".

Hard to tell from your post, but do you mean the first one says "Shan" like the "stan" in "standard"? And the second says "sha" like the "ho" in "hobbit"?

Re: MTV's The Shannara Chronicles-Starring John Rhys-Davies, Manu Benn

(To DigificWriter) You're using the exact same typology for every syllable, so there is no emphasis difference. If you're trying to convey emphasis, you need to put just one syllable in bold or all caps, otherwise I don't know which one you're trying to stress. The only difference between your two renderings is which side of the hyphen you're putting the N on, plus the presumably silent E, and neither of those tells me much about how the vowels are pronounced or how the syllables are stressed.

Guess it'll be interesting to see if they try and keep the characters from Elfstone if the show is successful, or if they still dump most of the cast and recast for the Wishsong story. Kinda what killed Heroes: they planned to recast, but the cast got popular, so they just ran them into the ground instead. Eh, let's see if the first season goes well before we plan out multi-season arcs I guess :)
I've been wondering if they might use the same cast as different characters each time they go to a different book. Kind of like American Horror Story, but it with one consistent arc and timeline.

sojourner: Yes, "Shan" in Brooks' official pronunciation rhymes with "stan", while, in the unofficial pronunciation, "Sha" rhymes with "ha".

That's what I was trying to convey and apparently failing at miserably.

So which syllable is stressed in each version?

Re: MTV's The Shannara Chronicles-Starring John Rhys-Davies, Manu Benn

^ Brooks stresses the "Shan", while most everybody else stresses the "Sha".

 Those are the same syllable!! I do not understand what the hell you are trying to communicate. You do understand what I mean by "stress," right? Like, con-tract, stressed on the first syllable, is a signed agreement, and con-tract, stresssed on the second, means to shrink.

Re: MTV's The Shannara Chronicles-Starring John Rhys-Davies, Manu Benn

Brooks says SHANN-uh-ra, the show says shuh-NAHR-a. The latter is how I've always pronounced it, too.

^Thank you.

I've never really thought about it much, but when I've seen the title The Sword of Shannara, I'm pretty sure my assumption would've been that it was by Brooks's pronunciation, because that fits the rhythm of the phrase better; but when I look at The Shannara Chronicles, I want to pronounce it the way they do on the show, because that fits the rhythm of that phrase better.

Regardless of how it's pronounced, I've been looking forward to this show for a very long time. The look of the trailers have been very impressive and I'm really sold on the idea of Manu being Allanon. What I'm curious to find out will be how much of the 'Genesis' backstory will be alluded to, something that Terry probably hadn't figured out yet back in the 80s when he first wrote 'Elfstones'.

Manu's version of Allanon will a departure from the books, but it should an interestng change none the less. And you can the destroyed space needle on the show's facebook cover picture.

At SLCC, Terry talked about how the people behind the series were the ones who wanted to make it more explicit within the context of the series and the Elfstones story that the Four Lands used to be our world, and I personally think it was the right call to make, especially since it does open the door for them to potentially branch beyond just strictly adapting that story and add new layers to the world and its characters.

I've always pronounced it the second way. I never really thought about pronouncing it the other way until you guys started talking about it here.

Since Brooks didnt really go deeply into that origin until over a decade or more after this i think it will depend on what the show writers plan.

Is this Elfstones of Shannara telling the story of the characters of that novel or is it Shannara... and will have the books style of jumping forward in time once the book story ends with the next book being a new group of characters with a cameo of the previous books characters.

If they are going to just be Elfstones of Shannara characters for multiple seasons i think plots of future stories could be altered and included and some of those did have more interaction with "our world" ruins.

At this point, nothing has been said about the producer's future plans, but Del Ray did reprint a new edition of the Elfstones novel that brands it as The Shannara Chronicles: Book One: Elfstones of Shannara and says to look for The,Shannara Chronicles: Book Two: Wishsong of Shannara, so take that for whatever you will.

Production values seem pretty high.

But regardless, I've been reading Brooks' Shannara since I was 12: I'll definitely be checking 'er out.

Just checked that out. Very cool and it re-affirms Terry stating the setting the setting for the Four Lands.

A couple weeks ago they released the opening credits. I like them, they give us a nice little overview of how our world became the show's world, with some cool effects.

I've been dying for another epic fantasy series like this for while, and this really is looking like exactly what I've been wanting.
