Favourite Bond films

I also agree that while 'The World Is Not Enough' has some fun moments and is a much, much better film than the snooze its predecessor 'Tomorrow Never Dies' was, I still think 'GoldenEye' is the superior film of the three.

There's just something more authentic about having Bond being played by a Brit. Only American arrogance would suggest that an American "should" play the character. Just my two cents.

Plus, isn't it generally agreed that it's easier for British actors to fake American accents than the reverse? They seem to be better at it.

For example, Linus Roache on Law & Order. His New York accent was absolutely flawless - you'd never guess he was English. I just don't see an American actor doing an English accent that accurately. (And I seem to remember that James Marsters wasn't exactly convincing in that regard - didn't his real accent pop up a few times?)

Just to throw my two cents in, I think Tom Hiddleston would make an excellent Bond. And in any case he's almost done with playing Loki. Just something to consider.

George Lazenby is Australian. Does anyone make a big deal about him not being English? I think most of the criticisms I've seen are of his bland performance, not his accent.

Non-American actors whom I could realistically see being considered:
Orlando Bloom (38)
Richard Armitage (44)
Damian Lewis (44)
Ewan McGregor (44)
Jude Law (42)

I remember a few years ago hearing rumors about Robert Pattinson. Dear God I hope he never plays Bond. I would definitely stop watching then.

I have no difficulty with the idea of an American Bond so long as they can do a passable English accent. The problem is that I'm unable to think of a single male American actor who can do so.

Both Lee Pace and Matthew Morrison can, as can James Marsters, although I don't think people could buy the latter in the role even though the character, as of SPECTRE, is in his mid-40s.

I so can't see Lee Pace as Bond, even though I've liked him in everything I've ever seen.

The other thing I'd say is that what you, an American, might consider to be a convincing English accent might well differ from what English people might find convincing. Admittedly I haven't heard either actor essay an English accent but I often read American viewers or critics praise an attempt at an accent and I think 'did they watch the same performance that I did?'

Have you not seen The Hobbit Trilogy? Pace's performance there as Thranduil is what has me convinced he can do a British-type accent effectively and believably, and, as for Morrison, he originated and continues to perform the role of Scottish playwright James M. Barrie in Broadway's Finding Neverland, and while I haven't had the opportunity to watch him perform, I have heard him sing and speak in the role courtesy of the Original Broadway Cast Recording, and he does an accent very well.

He may do a convincing accent but I agree -- he's not Bond. At least not the way we've come to expect Bond.

My general approach to these kinds of things is "Wait and see. EON will pick someone and they'll do their thing with the role." I was never worried about Craig, and look how he turned out.

Barbara and Michael know what they're doing. DigificWriter, you haven't even watched all the films yet. How can you possibly expect anyone to take you seriously when you try to tell us who should be playing the role?

'British type accent' in a fantasy film set in a made-up realm is one thing. Actually sounding like an Englishman or Scotsman in a film surrounded by other Brits is an entirely different thing.

Why do you keep harping on this like it has any relevance to anything?

I've seen enough of the movies to have a fair grasp of the franchise and to form an opinion about the direction of it going forward.

I don't think you need to have seen all the films to have a view on who should play Bond. But while I've seen Pace in Pushing Daisies, The Hobbit and GOTG, I've never seen anything remotely Bondian about him. Looks, voice, demeanour, anything. Yes, he's clearly a versatile actor but I don't see him as 007.

Of course, I said much the same about Daniel Craig...

 They all sound horrible! Pass.

If we're throwing around American actors then I nominate Matt Bomer. He's got the looks, talent, sauve-ness, charm, and he's young enough (but not too young) to do a couple films. Though I'm not sure if he can do an English accent.

But then again he might be too pretty to play Bond. 007 does have a ruggedness to him...

I keep mentioning it because if you haven't seen the entire film series, you aren't as fully informed as you could be. That, to me, suggests you don't know nearly as much as you are purporting to here.

Is it necessary to do so in order to comment? Of course not. But as someone who is demonstrably more familiar with the films, the books, its easy for me to see why what you're suggesting wouldn't work.

We'll just have to agree to disagree.

Well, Brosnan was quite pretty as was the young Moore. For me, it'd really be Bomer's accent that decided it one way or the other.

Though I imagine that the UK tabloids would lose their shit if an openly gay actor was cast as Bond. (Which is a plus for him, in my book!)

I'd enjoy that !

Did gays lose theirs when Aidan Gillen starred in Queer as Folk ?

I think he's a bit too handsome though. The literary Bond wasn't and people are used to a rougher Daniel Craig.

Future Bonds will need to look like killers.

Bloom ? No. Just no.

Armitage and Lewis are the only two I'd vote for on that list, but I don't think a ginger Bond would work. Lewis would have to dye !

Besides, they're all too old. You really need someone in their early 30's but not very youthful looking. You'd get a good few films out of them that way.

Not just the tabloids but I'm sure a lot of fans would throw temper tantrums and probably boycott any Bond film he did.

I read that he was the first choice to play Superman but then the director or producer got replaced and the new guy was like "No way!" So Henry Cavill was cast.

Relayer1, I also think that every gay man out there loved Gale Harold in the American version too.

Yeah, literally none of those actors will be Bond. Whoever does end up playing him is probably in his early to mid thirties right now, because he doesn't actually need to be the appropriate age (Bond is in his mid to late thirties, according to Ian Fleming's novels) for a few more years.
