New Series Announcement from StarTrek.com - Begins January 17, 2017

Re: New Series Announcement from StarTrek.com - Begins January 17, 201

One big issue is that this new Trek is US only. That means there will be a lot of downloading of the show by people outside the US. I also think this is a really bad idea to use Trek to blackmail people to pay for CBS All Access.

It isn't US only... It will only be available on CBS all access in the US... It will be available in other markets on more conventional means if someone wants to buy and air it...

CBS Television Studios announced today it will launch a totally new Star Trek television series in January 2017. The new series will blast off with a special preview broadcast on the CBS Television Network. The premiere episode and all subsequent first-run episodes will then be available exclusively in the United States on CBS All Access, the Network’s digital subscription video on demand and live streaming service.

That to me says US only.

Which won't keep people in other countries from watching it - it will just keep CBS from getting paid for it or seeing ratings numbers. Not great.

Yeah, they won't shut out the rest of the world and help piracy.

Heck of a way to start a Monday, eh? New Trek coming!

Re: New Series Announcement from StarTrek.com - Begins January 17, 201

I'm about to faint with this news, but this part makes me very nervous:

"while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966."

That sounds an awful lot like preachy, politically correct TNG plots. I know for some people that's what Star Trek should be. But personally I find it annoying.

I agree, we certainly don't need any more terrible "message" shows, just stick to compelling drama.

Here's an interesting tidbit:
Almost half a century later, the Star Trek television series are licensed on a variety of different platforms in more than 190 countries, and the franchise still generates more than a billion social media impressions every month.

:raises hand: I could do with a message show now and then, if it isn't TOO hamfisted. I understand what those of you objecting to them are saying, but "The Omega Glory" and "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield" are two of my faves from TOS, as well.

I think the problem is that TNG, DS9, VOY, and ENT were BAD at them most of the time. It takes a writer that really *believes* the dialog they're writing for the characters in an episode like that and actors who can *sell* it, not ones that've just been told "we're doing a message episode" or whatever.

Isn't that what's called "drama"? I'm not sure how any Star Trek series could work without in some way reflecting and commenting upon the world we live in. That's kind of what science fiction at its best has always done.

It doesn't have to be "preachy", that's about tone.

It can be done well, but it can also be done really badly. For example, The Doomsday Machine commented on nuclear weapons but wasn't a "War is bad" story. On the other hand, you've got stories like The Outcast (and I don't want to open a can of worms here) which was basically just "People who disagree with homosexuality are bad".

I know it's a very difficult tightrope, but I'm scared that it will just come off as preachy.

Obviously, this is very exciting news. I don't like most of Kurtzman's previous work, but I'm still hopeful.

I just hope the series has an edge to it. With high production value, interesting characters and great writing in the spirit of Star Trek.

I don't want to see unfocused dumbed down action like ST2009 / STID, but I don't want to see something as cold and pretentious as TNG Season One. I want it to be somewhere in between.

Of course it can be done right, but I think that Voy/Ent & modern Hollywood in general have put me off them to the point I'd rather they not try at all. Modern Hollywood is actually a bit behind the curve now & has fallen back into the PC nonsense that was minty fresh 20 years ago. If they try to base message shows off that, they're gonna end up looking silly.

Back in the day it gave us the thing where the captain literally had his therapist sitting next to him on the bridge, as if a person qualified to be captain would need that. I love TNG, but -especially in the early seasons- Troi's presence has taken on a comedic element for me nowadays. Every scene she's in is 20% funnier.

Anyway, my point is, message shows kinda age badly unless they're about something super timeless & universal like war.

Are any of these other news sites any more reliable than startrek.com when it comes to Star Trek news?

Troi provided insight into what their opponent was thinking. She wasn't a bridge therapist.

Oh that's another important factor. All the characters must have a purpose, both on the crew and dramatically. In TNG S1 Geordi was basically just the blind black guy. It was only a year later when they realized they needed both a chief engineer and something for him to do that he actually had a purpose on the show.

They then repeated their mistake with Travis on ENT, but he never got much more to do than fly the ship.

^ He got to do a walking speech on the bridge one time. :p

Complete non-sequitur: It is nearly impossible to operate a laptop touchpad with an oven mitt on.

I wish they had kept the original idea of her as a sort of political officer, almost like the Tal Shiar. You wouldn't have been laughing at her then, I'll wager. ;)

"Pedal to the metal, Commander!"
