What HORROR Movies Are You Watching For Halloween Week?

So list the movies you are watching or will be watching this week of Halloween.


I have watched Creepshow and will be watching Fright Night(1985) next. I also watched Villiage of the Damned(1960) and Return of the Living Dead earlier this month. I hope to also watch Frankenstein(1931) and Bride of Frankenstein(1935) if TCM shows them this year.

I will probably watch the only two that have stuck out in my mind for the last 40 years:
The Exorcist and ALIEN (perhaps the entire ALIEN series, including Prometheus).

Depends on my schedule, but my DVR is already set to record a couple of old Hammer movies off TCM: "Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed" and "Dracula A.D. 1972."

And I was watching the 1939 version of "The Cat and the Canary" just last night: a haunted house in the bayous, an escaped maniac, secret passages, and a reading of a will at midnight. Good, spooky Halloween fare.

And I won't be all surprised if I somehow manage to squeeze in the original John Carpenter version of "Halloween" as well, since it seems to be running on AMC fairly frequently this month . . ...

The Hammer movies are great. I watched the first Frankenstein last year.


Carpenters Halloween is a good one. I haven't caught that one this year but I will have to add that to the list.

The Hammer movies are great. I watched the first Frankenstein last year.

I also recently acquired a box set of Hammer movies, including BRIDES OF DRACULA (my favorite!), CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF, and NIGHT CREATURES.

May have to crack that open after the trick-or-treaters stop ringing the doorbell . . .

I brought a Vincent Price box set last week (House on Haunted Hill, House of Usher, Haunted Palace, Tomb of Ligeia, Masque of the Red Death, the Last Man on Earth, Witchfinder General, and the two Phibes movies.) I might try and make my way through that.

And I suppose I might see that last Paranormal Activity movie. I was there at the beginning, I might as well see it through to its inevitable bitter end.

Depends if I'm working, I guess.

I'm watching the entire Saw series back to back. I love this series, it has such an elaborate and complicated story with twists and turns and lots of characters. It's so much more than torture porn.

Ah yes I watched the first Phibes movie about 2 weeks age. Excellent. I haven't year seen the second. I love Vincent Price movies. He is still the master of horror. House of Usher is great.I think I may have that on my DVR so I will maybe watch that one also.

To my mind, the second Phibes movie is not as good as the first one, although I still wish they had made one more to finish the trilogy. And this is where I'm obliged to mention that House of Usher was scripted by Richard Matheson.

One oddity about The Haunted Palace: although sold as yet another Poe movie, it's actually an adaptation of "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward" by H. P. Lovecraft!

The Pit and the Pendulum is probably my favourite (or is at least tied with Masque...), but I think it was his only Poe 'adaptation' that wasn't part of the set. I have it in DVD of it somewhere, so I might pull it out.

I'm positive that Price was also in another '...Charles Dexter Ward' segment in 'Tales of Terror'. I haven't watched it in a while, so I might be misremembering.

There was also The Raven and Tales of Terror (both scripted by Matheson, as was The Pit and the Pendulum).

I remember reading in various publications over the years that if there had been a third 'Phibes' film it would have been about Phibes wife being even more ruthless than he was. I also like to think that 'Theatre of Blood' is a 'spiritual successor' to the Phibes films.
As for Halloween movies I think I'll watch the original 'Halloween' and/or one of the 'Living Dead' movies. Or I might change it up and watch 'Dark City' or 'Manhunter'.

Oh, yes, "Theatre of Blood" is very much structured along the same lines as the Phibes movies, albeit a little gorier.

And I remember hearing somewhere that third film was tentatively titled THE BRIDES OF DOCTOR PHIBES, presumably referring to both his wife and Vulnavia.

Al excellent movies. What I really like about Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein is that the monsters play it straight around a comedic Abbott and Costello. The monster movie stories really revitalized A and C's career at the time.

And my five-day Halloween weekend begins today. I haven't really decided what I'll watch, since I mostly do that on the spur of the moment-- and based on what's available on TCM and Impact On Demand-- but it always includes a couple of old Universals and probably an episode or two of Night Stalker. Definitely whatever Hammer Films are on the air. I've also got a new Jean Rollin DVD that I haven't watched yet. Creepshow is a good suggestion, as is the Vincent Price Collection, both of which I have. But first, I must watch last night's Supernatural.
