What is Star Trek and its future?

Star Trek is space opera like the horse operas it was patterned after. But it was so surreal, it could have been anything that supported a good story. Even Kirk said it all seemed like an elaborate hoax. Anew Star Trek should be as different as possible to attract a whole new audience. The trappings of TOS has seen it's day. The Next generation was successful even though it wasn't wholly inspired and perhaps shouldn't have been as successful as it was. Only time will tell. Since now Star Trek is in competition with itself. It has to be as different from TOS as possible.

That's why I would love to have future series in a variety off styles. Maybe a more techno sleek version, another could be a space western, etc. It's guaranteed nobody would like everything (but that's guaranteed any way). At least there would be something for everybody.

I agree and disagree to a certain point. I think that TOS presents a facet of Trek that was good for it's day but also has many of the more timeless elements of Star Trek in it. Cooperation, adventure, social commentary, etc. with characters who are actively seeking a solution to the problem of the week.

Star Trek, as I have mentioned before, really thrives with characters who the audience can identify with and with questions that reflect society's current questions. TOS did this well, but as time moves on, the questions have changed.

So, I think a new series would do well to remember the core of Trek as well as be willing to adopt a more contemporary view on technology. Remembering that the tech is not the most important part of the story, and should only be front and center when necessary.

Exactly! I think that what set Star Trek apart from other series was the fact it was that it was believable! These were not random 'aliens' they were people who happened to be born on other worlds with varying genetic and physical makeup. The character relationships were the driving force. The special affects were added primarily to accommodate the story. With the exception of a transporter, which was the best thing that happened to the franchise! But a new Trek should focus on characters first. Appearances second. And if a special affect is needed decide how to get it done. One of the most impressive feats of Star Trek special affects was the green disomvodied hand that took hold of the Enterprise in Who Mourns for Adonis?. So I think that future Star Trek will only be good if they don't fall into the trap of 'we can use this affect and therefore should. And I'd like to see technology that isn't perfect myself. Scottie said it well. "The fancier it is, the easier it is to plug up the plumbing."

Scottie said it well. "The fancier it is, the easier it is to plug up the plumbing."

1. The character's name is Scotty, not Scottie.

2. The quote is actually "The more they overthink the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain."

How do you expect to pitch a story to CBS if you don't even know basic stuff like this?

I thought it was "over-tink the plumbing."

I quoted from the script. ;)

Maybe so but the way Doohan says the line sure sounds like "tink."

Even so, you didn't say 'tink' the first time. People misquote and have brain-farts all the time man, it's better just to admit that the actual line slipped your mind.

The original misquote was from Dukhat.

However, I have been guilty of misquoting lines many times. For which I will graciously apologize. :techman:

And no need to apologise. It's just sometimes better not to dig your heels in about some things.

I see the motion picture being the pilot of a phase two next series.
can you imagine all the stories waiting for the perennial Star Trek to blossom again. They said at the end of Voyager that they had an embarrassment of riches of stories. What happened to them. Did they give them to Stargate. Well thankfully Stargate is off the air as it was Trek lite and there is currently a void of space operas on tv now. The sy fy channel has said it is looking for it's next great space opera. Why can't that be Star Trek turned on it's head.
