Jenna leaving - next compnion ?

Frank Skinner would be at the top of my list but I would like to see Rigsy (Joivan Wade) travel with The Doctor for a little while or as long as we're allowed to dream, how about River for a season.

I simply don't understand the fascination with Osgood.

She is the ultimate companion. A Doctor Who fan that actually gets to have adventures with the Doctor.

That said, it would get old quickly.

Lots of things in Doctor Who have gotten old quickly. At least this would be something new to get old quickly.
I would argue the shtick has already gotten old before the potential of her being companion. Bad enough they're bringing her back from the dead (or whatever).

My issue with Osgood was that she was written just like her Pertwee-era ancestor (?) - the utliamte geeky scientist, complete with an asthma inhaler.

I love Osgood for two reasons.

First, she's like Izzy -- a science-fiction fan. She doesn't need the Doctor's exposition because she already has a pretty solid grounding in science.

Second, Ingrid Oliver is cute and I have a little bit of a crush on her.

No love for Maria, Luke or Kelsey?

How about you help me throw Skye into a wood chipper?

I'd say it's a plan.

But yeah, Osgood is just a wish fulfillment character designed to get a certain group of fangirls excited. "She's just like me!" And my problem is "She's just like them!"

Ditto :)

I think if she became a companion it would get old quite quickly...unless the character changed. If she became her own person, leaving all the fangirlness behind, it might make for an interesting character arc.

"You know it's really flattering that you dress like me, like the other mes I mean, but maybe once in a while you could dress like you?"

I agree with both of you

I can see that. RTD had to reconceptualize Donna Noble when he decided to bring her back in series 4. She'd been designed for one story, and she needed more depth. I can see a similar process at work for Osgood.

And I think your idea of a character arc would work really well. Maybe she goes into a situation thinking she has it all sorted out, only to discover that her hubris actually makes the situation worse, and so she has to dial her personality back.

I imagine the reality of travelling with the Doctor would be very different to the perfect image she's likely conjured up of him in her mind.

I actually thought Morven's Christie's O'Donnell was a slightly more subtle variation of the same character.

The only problem with the arc I proposed is that it could be seen as a metaphor for growing up: Oh sure it's fine to love Doctor Who but you grow out of it eventually (the very idea!) so if (in some crazy parallel universe) it were up to me even if she blossomed into her own person there'd always need to be some vestige of the fan girl in there.

If we do get Osgood as a companion, and she turns out to be a Zygon, maybe we'll finally have a shape-changing companion who isn't a broken down animatronic or a talking Penquin. It'd also be the first "monster" companion if you think about it, without the troubles and much more cost-effective say, than using a Cybermen or a Dalek.
