Spoilers Gotham - Season 2

I doubt Selina would rely too much on Penguin. She's the type to make sure she has her own stash of reserves.

I'll do you one better, Barbra. I predict, within a year, your show will be canceled.

Jesus Christ this was bad.

Didn't see it, but I read the io9 summary. To restate my comment there:

Huh? Why would it be redheads that Jerome inspired to be proto-Jokers? The Joker has green hair. I want to say “It makes no sense,” but with Gotham that’s tantamount to saying “The show exists.”

Also, having so many potential Jokers, and having the “real” one just be an imitation of this Jerome kid, rather cheapens the character. The Joker should be one of a kind, a unique and unprecedented force, not just a copycat. I want to say “This was a terrible idea,” but... see above.

You really shouldn't base your critiques on second hand accounts.

Holy Red (Hood) Herring, Batman!

I'm actually glad we don't have the full on Joker. It The actor (Cameron Monaghan?) did a great job though, channeling previous Jokers. The magic stuff made sense, as they might have had that in the circus he was involved in. It would've been nice to see more of that.

I'm not putting too much stock on the "real" Joker being one of the people we see in the end. I think it's just more of planting the seeds of why Gotham need a Batman, and why Gordon isn't enough.

Nice to know that even though you don't watch this show anymore you'll still be complaining about it.

I can't stand to watch it anymore, but I still can't quite look away...

Basically, I've been keeping up with the reviews just to see whether the first week was an aberration, to see if maybe I should reconsider. Some reviewers do seem to be liking the current direction, but what I read about the plots still leaves me disinclined to resume watching. I may stop reading the reviews eventually.

So whoever ended up being the real Joker, it'll be a copy/successor to Jerome...

Holy shit, Bruno Heller is fucking certifiable.

I actually loved the ending. It makes the Joker more than just a man. He's some form of illness infecting Gotham. One that will spread from person to person until Batman shows up.

It's a reversal of the notion that the Joker and more colorful criminal element in Gotham is a reaction to Batman taking out the mob, most recently used in the Dark Knight trilogy. Instead Gotham always had something about it that drives people to be like that, Batman is a response to it.

And since its at least 8 to 10 years before Batman and the Joker, Jerome won't even be a memory. No big deal.

I haven't seen it yet, but potential future Jokers being redheads could be a twist on the "Red Hood" concept.

The classic origin is the one loosely used in the '89 movie -- that the proto-Joker was a member of the Red Hood Gang who fell into a vat of acid in an altercation with Batman, whereupon he was disfigured and driven insane.

Instead Gotham always had something about it that drives people to be like that, Batman is a response to it.

Which is kind of inevitable in a prequel. Smallville did the same thing -- Clark Kent ended up encountering most of Superman's major villains and allies before he ever became Superman. Which was an inversion of the usual assumption that Superman was the original superhero who inspired all the others.

Wow. I was really, really, REALLY shocked that they killed Jerome. That was certainly the biggest shocker of the show, and I think while it's an amazing short term twist, on the long term it's a bad move. I thought the actor they got was doing a really good Joker, and I can't believe they threw him away after only four appearances.

I mean it's a cute idea of him being the inspiration for copycats and all, but who are they going to get that will be better than him?

I'm also shocked that they killed Essen, seeing as how she married Gordon in the comics.

My only real complaint about this season is the continued use of Barbara. Ugh.

He can't get with Barbara either. She's too far gone. Unless there's some weird development or twist that sweeps her antics under the rug.

The Joker being a curse upon Gotham, isn't that how The New 52 does it?

And ooh, boy, Alfred just flirts with everything with two legs doesn't he? :guffaw:

Yeah, the actor was great.

I think the reason they offed Jerome is the same reason that Arrow shuffled off their Suicide Squad story arc and killed Deadshot -- the Suicide Squad movie next year (featuring both Deadshot and the Joker). I'm sure some Warners Bros policy has been put in place to override TV versions of characters with their movie counterparts, to avoid brand confusion.
