The sonic sunglasses have to die. Worst idea ever.

So after a decade of everyone bitching and moaning about the sonic screwdriver, we lose it and now we're complaining about its replacement?

The Doctor is always going to carry a sonic device. It's either that or he magically has something which goes ding that is convenient for the situation at hand like Tennant did.

I'm okay with a catch-all sonic device, be it a screwdriver, sunglasses, or towel.

I don't think I ever complained about the screwdriver. I like that but what I did complain about was the writers using it as a crutch too often. Can't blame the device but I can blame the writers who use it in their stories too much..

Why? Is not like he hasn't gone sonic free before.

Another great episode, the signing was a bit annoying as she hardly ever looked at the signer.

If she was lip reading then fine, but I don't know why he bothered most of the time.

Lip reading takes a lot more effort, even for someone with extensive training in it, and she clearly didn't do it just fine since it took her a while to sort out what the ghost beacons were saying. My ASL professor was shit at it, made it really hard to communicate with him in anything but Sign.

One thing about Sign on that fluent level is you get used to watching the actual signing in your periphery so you can watch faces and expressions and body-language and everything else around you. I found this episode a pretty realistic depiction of it actually.

i'm sure we will get a new sonic soon. Christmas is coming up and they need toys to sell.

^Yeah and the sonic sunglasses don't really look like anything except regular sunglasses so I'm not sure parents will want to spend lots of money on a fancy box with Peter Capldi on it that just has regular sunglasses they could have got from Primark or somewhere for £2 inside!

I wasn't saying she was fine at lip reading, I was saying I was fine with her ignoring the signer if what she was doing was lip reading.

My wife works with educators of deaf an blind people and I understand having a strong deaf character is a big deal and has led to a discussion of where the signers job ends.

Given she decided to stay that really limited his choice on if he should stay or not.

I would have loved it, if the episode took the opportunity to show the Doctor's ability to actually pick up sign language really fast, where he gets better and better over the course of the episode.

Technically he could go on a study trip for sign language before traveling back to before the flood.
He has a time machine, he has all the time in the world. ;)

Well all the time in the Universe, but his TARDIS isn't exactly known for it's ability to go where he wants to go. So he might decide to go learn Sign Language but end up saving yet another world.

When the base was in night mode. Why couldn't the ghosts either cut the oxygen supply or something to kill the crewmembers in the Faraday cage?

^ The ghosts want more "converts" to be able to send a stronger signal. That's why they called the "rescue" sub.

Also, the Doctor says something about them still learning how to operate the base, which is strange considering that one of them is Captain Moran.

Well, they certainly must be some kind of electromagnetic constructs in the shape of the deceased, otherwise why else can they only affect metal objects and can't seem to penetrate the Faraday cage. The extra electromagnetic interference with the machinery that operates in day mode keeps them from being coherent enough to operate.

I just don't know why they would need to kill someone to make one and why not make multiples of the same pattern.

Rescue sub or not, they still want to kill all the people who saw the symbols. Maybe because Lun did not see the symbols they don't want to kill the whole group at once because they don't want to kill him. Also the recue sub would come I would think if the surface lost contact with the base (everyone dead).

But even in the JNT era the Doctor still carried around interchangeable devices that go ding. I find a catch-all device that can do anything easier to believe than just conveniently having the device needed on hand.

What happened to Father's Day time travel rules? Here the Doctor takes the TARDIS and changes the timeline (at leat according to Clara's explanation). Where are those Llangolier monsters to clear up the mess he's caused? Or has Moffat waved all that away?

Loved it though. Hope the second episode doesn't let it down.

1) We don't yet know exactly how this is going to play out. Likely the Doctor taking the TARDIS back is what is supposed to happen.

2) It isn't because history was changed in Father's Day that attracted the Reapers, but rather that the specific change (Pete Tyler living) was a significant enough change to catch their attention.

3) There is no set rules in the Doctor Who universe. Father's Day has been contradicted already, and had itself contradicted earlier material.

4) Had the Reapers shown up they would have had to pay Paul Cornell royalties.
