Star Wars: Episode VII: The Nerd Rage Awakens

This is what the fandom thought about TPM back in 99 too and that it was going to be a Titanic killer

Fair enough, but history doesn't always repeat itself and at least Lucas isn't writing and directing this one. And I say that as a fan that actually enjoys TPM in spite of all its many flaws, shortcomings and creative missteps.

All it has to do is be good. Great would be nice, but at this point I just want it to wow me and make me feel at least somewhat the way I did when I saw the OT as a small child.
You echoed all of my thoughts exactly

TPM is a deeply flawed film but it gets more hate than it ever deserved, even with Jar Jar's obnoxious antics and some of the wooden acting and dialogue. It's not a great movie but I've always a soft spot in my heart for it.

TPM on the whole isn't the greatest movie ever, but there are individual pieces within it that are absolutely incredible; the Pod Race, the Duel of the Fates... I find it best to look at TPM as "The Hobbit" of the Star Wars movies. It was the cute little prologue to the real story.

One of the big things I didn't enjoy, Liam Neeson. He was so incredibly wooden, more so than any one else in the film.

I didn't tink he was all that wooden, he was trying to play a calm cool Jedi Master, Samuel L. Jackson had the same level of detachment in his acting.

The prequel DVD's looked like ass, the Blu-ray of The Phantom Menace was a huge step up in quality.

And the new CGI Yoda inserted into Episode I is such an enormous improvement over the puppet used in the original version of the film that all by itself it justified a Blu ray re-edit of the film.

I just want to reiterate how surreal this all is. In a little over two months time, I will hopefully be sitting in one of the middle rows of a theater auditorium, waiting for the lights to dim as we get to see the mythology continue, 32 years later. To be in that darkened theater waiting for that movie to come on is the completion of a journey that started from my childhood and now is being resurrected for me as an adult. Not just a movie sequel

From cheatsheet.com.

Because Episode VII represents the first Star Wars film in 10 years, the expectations are sky high. Until recently, we haven’t been truly able to quantify the extent of this. Thanks to a Varietypoll though, we now know just how out of control things have gotten. The poll tells us that upwards of 63% of fans expect The Force Awakens to be the best Star Wars movie ever made, an astronomical number when you consider the fact that we still don’t even know the story or plot points.

Can we say with some amount of confidence that the new Star Wars will be markedly better than Lucas’s prequel trilogy? Early returns say yes, but to hope for the best the franchise has ever given us only sets audiences up for disappointment. Without knowing anything of the plot, characters, or even feel, it’s hard to make predictions on anything outside of sheer hope. The prequels went a long way toward setting the bar low; now, it would appear as though we’ve kicked the bar up into the stratosphere.

I still think fans have unrealistic expectations of the film.

This is why certain movies can never live up to the hype. Not only does it have to satisfy the adults in the audience, it has to also satisfy the kids inside those adults that saw the movie thirty-plus years ago.

A tough thing to balance.

I'm super hyped about the film. But to think it's going to be the best is a bit ridiculous. Because then, not only would it be the best Star Wars film every, it would be one of the best films ever.

TFA could be an incredible film by all accounts and still not be the best. The first two are just that good.

I am not inclined to disagree.

This.

I'm realistic. I don't expect it to be the best film in the entire Saga, I just want it to be and hope it's the best Star Wars movie since 1983. As long as it's at least as good and entertaining in my eyes as ROTJ I'd say most of my fan expectations will be met and I'll be more than satisfied.

I don't need a movie - sequel, prequel or otherwise - to be The Godfather. I just want to have a great time watching it and look forward to seeing it again.

Meesa thinkin' dat dis post is pretty okie-day. :techman:

There is always some segment of opinion that will have over hype in their expectations. I'm not really surprised by this fact.

"Best ever" is not really a title I'll ascribe to many films, including Star Wars itself. Is it one of my favorite films? Sure, but it hardly makes it "the best." I don't care much for Empire, and the general consensus seems to be that Empire is a better film.

Regardless, TFA will be something I'll enjoy in January and will hopefully will enjoy again.

The first was good because it was groundbreaking in so many ways, but as a film, it is lacking. Empire, however, is THAT good, and I doubt TFA can live up to that.
