Peeple - Useful new app to help cyberbullies harrass others.

I certainly don't want that to happen. What those people do is sick, twisted, hateful misogyny, and they need called to the carpet for it as often as possible. I wouldn't wish it upon my worst enemy.

Once we connect it to smart glasses or smart contacts we can live in a Black Mirror episode or that one episode of Community where they become a wacky scifi future over the weekend.

I have to agree, when I first heard about this I half suspected it was a Brooker inspired trailer for a new episode...

Co-founder Nicole McCullough comes at the app from a different angle: As a mother of two in an era when people don’t always know their neighbors, she wanted something to help her decide whom to trust with her kids.

How about this: Put down the phone and go knock on their door and introduce yourself...

It says that you have to have the person's cell phone number in order to post a review about them...

That is only to add someone to the database who has not been reviewed before. If someone else has already made a profile for that person, you can go ahead and post reviews of him or her whether you know the number or not.

If you haven't registered, the site will only show positive reviews of 3 to 5 stars, but I suspect if most people don't register, visitors will quickly figure out that 3 stars actually means 1 star, since it is the lowest rating you can give. Also, what's to stop a person from giving a positive number of stars but posting nasty things in the comments?

Although I don't recall which article, I think I read that giving other people negative reviews will also slightly lower your own rating, so I guess at least there's that, if true.

I'm wondering if there's a way for people to opt out, and make sure that no one can post a profile. I'm betting there isn't though.

Peeple is a wonderful idea I wholeheartedly support.

:shifty:

"Well all the people on it are nice, but the app keeps refering to itself in the third person and making egotistical remarks, 1 star".

I rate you six Robert Goulets.

I rate you six Robert Goulets.

I always thought he, Tony Orlando and Wayne Newton were the same dude.

Yelp for People-- Dinner For Schmucks..that's me!

When people see me, they know I'm a douche. While this app may be problematic for others, I wear who I am openly.

Same here. I must say that I am almost curious how many folks online despise me. Especially the anti-SLS/anti-NASA new-spacers, EELV apologists, etc.

It means I'm on target.

Then too--internet shaming can have positive effects on negative people

Now to get Alan Dean Foster to give me his secret way to download a shoggoth to his house..badly in need of a fatal exception error.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I rate you 3 Antares rockets.

It's not even the first. There's Klout, but that didn't really go anywhere as it was a bad idea bound to fail, and I don't really see this as being any different. It will likely just sink at the idea stage and be yet another forgotten idea that the internet never needed. I expect HBO's Silicon Valley to parody this at some point, and actually, I think they already have with the DudeBro storyline. This a pretty good article that compares the two.

Klout is an influence meter, not a rating system with potentially negative scores.

Klout has always been laughably useless, though.
