Big announcement?

Well, wouldn't the BIG ANNOUNCEMENT, if it were about David and Catherine, come from Big Finish, instead of Doctor Who Official? I don't recall them making that big a deal when the River Song audios were announced.

And I say this being excited about it, too. But personally, Missing Episodes would've been the single best one to make, an announcement.

Again, if it were the Big Finish announcement, wouldn't Big Finish itself try and make a big deal out of it? They had the whole Days Countdown announcment for the River Song/Old Doctors-New Monsters thing.

Brand manager Ed Russell has confirmed it isn't a Tennant/Tate BF announcement. They're not going to hype something about tie-ins (or about missing episodes, unfortunately) to a general new series audience.

A spin-off on BBC 3 called "Class" about teenagers in the Doctor Who universe.

BBC Three today announces Class - a new 8x45 Doctor Who spin-off from the acclaimed young adult author Patrick Ness.
Class is a YA series set in contemporary London. Incredible dangers are breaking through the walls of time and space, and with darkness coming, London is unprotected. With all the action, heart and adrenalin of the best YA fiction (Buffy, Hunger Games), this is Coal Hill School and Doctor Who like you've never seen it before.

Steven Moffat says: “No one has documented the dark and exhilarating world of the teenager like Patrick Ness, and now we're bringing his brilliant storytelling into Doctor Who. This is growing up in modern Britain - but with monsters!”

On his first television series, writer Patrick Ness says: "I'm astounded and thrilled to be entering the Doctor Who universe, which is as vast as time and space itself. There's so much room there for all kinds of amazing stories, and to work with Steven Moffat and Brian Minchin to find a place to tell one of my own has been an absolute joy. I can't wait for people to meet the heroes of Class, to meet the all-new villains and aliens, to remember that the horrors of the darkest corners of existence are just about on par with having to pass your A-Levels."

So, Torchwood meets Press Gang.

Which will serve as a nice distraction if Doctor Who itself has a reduced or non-existent run next year. Patrick Ness is a pretty well-regarded YA writer, though, so it'll probably be decent. Given "all-new villains and aliens," I doubt it'll have much connection to Doctor Who beyond the Coal Hill name and other minor references.

You know, maybe because I'm a foreigner, but I actually expected something more. Especially with the "bigger than anyone expects."

Now I wish it was the Tennant-Tate BF thing that was announced. :p

Yeah, thats what I thought. Although I wonder if Moffat's relation with Class will be the same with Davies' with Torchwood/SJA (not direct showrunning, but definitely his ideas floating by).

You might be able to consider that a "Big" announcement.
But that's not even close to something "Huge" or "Massive"

So, will Clara be in it? Do they have to kill her (Or have her stay on a different planet when she leaves the main show) to explain why she's not in it?

Will this finally give us a chance to see Ian again?

I kind of expected a new series, and thought that it'd be used as a trial run for a new showrunner, but I'm not sure Patrick Ness would take on Doctor Who fulltime. Had it been someone like Toby Whithouse, for example, then I'd have been more sure. Still, stranger things have happened.

This is fairly weak news. At least Torchwood had Captain Jack to draw me in. He was a popular character well before Torchwood existed. Hard to know why I should pay attention to this.

What an utter disappointment.
