I guess they are worried that Independence Day 2 will soak up the sci-fi action box office for a couple of weeks after its release.

The article that Squiggy linked in the other thread suggested that availability of IMAX venues was a factor in moving the date back:

[...]

The reason why M:I5 played late July, versus its original December 2015 date, was to take advantage of those Imax venues that were open, and that's the same reason why Par is taking the Enterprise out on the late July date.

Apparently, Warner Bros.' Tarzan has roped up all the Imax hubs on July 1, leaving none for Captain Kirk and Spock. Seven weeks into its play, M:I5 is still hanging around the top 5.

Updated 2016. No Apes

too quick? Dawn was 3years after Rise anyway. and maybe too many SF films? (Trek, ID4, XM) then again 2017 is just as crowded (SW8, GOTG2, TG2? etc)

agreed. was Skyfall released to the day of Dr No? *checks*...oh wait it was nearly!(in UK). also Trek VI didn't bother with Sept for the 25th

so long as it comes out the same year round about the same time its fine (anyway STB should still be in cinemas for the anniversary)

We need to start a movement. All real fans of Trek must hold off seeing STB until September 8th. C'mon, people. We can do this!

OK, maybe not.

What would be neat is if they could come up with some big promotion on September 8 that would create a nice box office bump for the movie on that date.

September is where movies go to die.

The highest grossing September release ever is Hotel Transylvania with a relatively paltry 42 million it's opening weekend.

Wow. September has the worst highest opening weekend take of any month.

I got it! September 8th, one night only, STB on TV! Pay per view. Something like that. They can make it work. Offer the option of seeing it in black in white. (Anyway, we didn't have a color TV until 1968.)

Huh? Huh? :D

Maybe a commemorative poster for people who see it on the 8th? With both sets of actors?

The thing is, of course, by the first week of September, its weekly gross will be down to $2 million or so (maybe lower). So anything to create a bump in box office at that point would by mostly symbolic, anyway. A poster only given out to those who see the movie on the 8th (or maybe the week of the 8th) is probably enough to commemorate the day. It would also have to be something to appeal to a wider audience, so special showings of a TOS episode before the feature, or something like that, is unlikely to pack them in. Meh. I'm going off the idea.

If they've moved the release date back in order to score slots in IMAX theaters, that's probably only going to be for two or three weeks in late July/early August. Maybe they could bump it into IMAX again for a special anniversary event running the first week of September?

I think that's a good idea.

If the movie is doing really well at the box office, then they could try something a bit more radical:

"Star Trek" aired at 8:30 ET on that Thursday, September 8, 1966. Coincidentally, September 8, 2016 is also a Thursday. On that day, encourage theaters in the U.S. to have only one showing of the movie, and make it at 8:30 (7:30 Central, and Mountain, and 8:30 PT -- or whenever the show came on for the first time in each time zone). Have it in IMAX where possible, but charge "regular" prices for this night.

It would make seeing the movie as similar as it could be to when viewers first watched "The Man Trap" fifty years earlier. It would be a kind of one-time shared experience for all fans of TOS too, especially those of us there at the first run. Anyone seeing STB that day is watching it exactly when "The Man Trap" aired. So, fifty years later, it's like we're all sitting down together as one to watch an episode of "Star Trek", again.

It couldn't mean that much lost revenue for not running the movie all day on September 8th, especially if the movie has been doing really well at the box office, anyway.
