Star Wars: Episode VII: The Nerd Rage Awakens

She was killed by her nephew Jacen after he fell to the Dark Side and became Darth Caedus.

yeah, and it didn't even feel right for the story. I mean, I would have hated to see Mara killed anyway, but it just didn't feel like it really worked. Plus, Jacen Solo had been my most hated main EU character since the NJO books, so having my most hated EU character kill my favorite really sucked.

You can blame Traviss. If you hanged around the tf.n boards back before the fans and her decided to hate on each other, you got the sense she disliked Zahn's contributions on a professional level mostly being compared to it (and him).

If only Mara had been a Mandalorian...

She could always turn up in Rebels...in fact anybody could.

Plus with the anthology series, they could do just about anything.

I had left the Star Wars books by then -- I got four books into the NJO era and decided I just wasn't feeling Star Wars any more -- so I never had the experience of reading a Traviss novel, but from everything I've heard she seems quite talented -- and unpleasant.

I enjoyed her Republic Commando works and the Mandalorian world-building (sometimes building over) she did.

I like mil-scifi so that didn't hurt.

Screw Karen Traviss.... sorry sister, you ain't bigger than the overall story and her disdain for the fundamental structure of the entire Star Wars universe was readily apparent towards the end.

Mara's death was pointless and offended me more than Chewie's death. I hated the Jacen Solo story line, was disgusted at Lucasfilm forcing yet another Galactic Civil War on a galaxy recovering for the Vong invasion, and that set of books really soured me on the EU novels. I never bought another one.

Well, Karven Traviss's Republic Commando books are my favorite books of any genre or series ever, not just SW. I love all the characters, the stories themselves wer egreat, and I like its attitude toward the Republic Era jedi, honestly. If I was stuck on a desert island, the Republic Commando books are the ones I'd want with me. Whatever her faults, as a writer she turned anonymous clones and faceless mandalorians into some of my favorite parts of SW. If she hated Zahn and mara, that sucks and maybe it says something negative about her, but I can't deny my love of her RC books.

I liked Chewie's death. Sometimes a main character should die, and its not like he died in a lame, non heroic way. Honestly, Chewie dying to save a Solo, and the final described scene of him shaking a fist at the moon, fit perfectly for how I'd imagine the character would go out. Now, I didn't want him to die, but I didn't think it was an unworthy death.

Mara, on the other hand, died for extremely stupid reasons, in a poorly done book series (although, full disclosure, I LOVE the SW: Legacy book that focused on jaina and Boba Fett, which was written by Traviss). I hated Jacen Solo since NJO. His "We shouldn't use the force to help" BS in that series drove me mad, then his heel turn found new ways of infuriating me.

The Jaina and Boba Fett book was obnoxious because it was basically an entire novel about how amazing the Mandos were and how dumb the Jedi were - the template of most of Ms. Traviss' later work.

As a whole the entire EU got a lot more depressing once Chewie died.

After that it was fair game. Han and Leia hopefully will have had a better three years in the new continuity.

 Well I liked it, and I tend to agree with her about Jedi, at least from the Clone Wars era. Luke's jedi were a different breed, but Traviss pretty much mirrored my thoughts of post KOTOR era, pre-Empire jedi fairly well.
