Dress Uniforms

Everybody knows that most of our favorite Star Trek characters constantly complain about wearing their dress uniform. They are oviously fashioned too tight around the neck and other inconveniences.

It just struck me how handsome Bashir looks in his white dress uniform. And the crew of E-E on top of that.

They obviously need a tailor to put things right or to modify the neckline. But I fear that Garak is of no use here, as the uniforms are Starfleet standard-issue. Someone designed them to torture our heroes....

Thoughts?

Luckily, as a Vorta I don't have to wear those uncomfortable things.

The white ones from Nemesis and the later DS9 episodes are very fashionable. If they are comfortable is beyond me.

The Starfleet uniform is tweaked several times, but I think complaining about the Dress uniform is just the trope of complaining when you have to dress up for something found in many shows and films.

It looks like the dress uniform changed after TNG's 2nd season (to the shorter coat version), then again 9 years later (to the white uniforms). Since Voyager was lost in the DQ, they did not get the updated uniforms. Voyager had to stick with the revised TNG era pre-movie uniforms.

Actually, there's subtle adjustments thru the entire series. S1 thru S3 look about 4 or 5" below fingertips. S4, S5 & S6 look maybe 2" below fingertips, & S7 is the shortest at midhand. That appears to be the cut they used in that Voyager pic

They should have kept the conquistador look. The one right after with the baggier pants makes me think of how annoying the rubbing or multiple layers of fabric must feel.

1 thing I liked about the whites. It does give the proper feel of a class A uniform. Almost no branch of service has a dress uniform that is almost identical to their standard uniform, & with the exception of some jacket length, that's how all the other TNG dress uniforms look

The dress uniforms in the TNG series are just awful to look at. I'm surprise who ever was in charged in the dressing and designing the dress uniforms did not include medals on the dress uniform.

Having dress uniforms that make you look like a waiter or perhaps a traffic cop is par for the course in many militaries. There's inevitably a counterreaction, and the next one strives to be different.

Starfleet goes one step further with the "next one will be different" thing, changing everything every five to ten years. Perhaps to give a chance for a truly representative selection of UFP fashion standards to be applied?

I think that was definitely deliberate, possibly to establish some 24th-Century sensibility about showing off (maybe from the Great Bird himself?).

I thought they were all OK (even the early TNG wraparound bathrobe look, which was at least original) except for the whites, which looked like someone wanted the Enterprise crew to look like they were on The Love Boat. Why would white suddenly pop up as a Starfleet dress uniform color?

Well, with US forces, only the Marines have a dress uniform that is much different from their service uniform since the Army replaced their greens with blues a few years back. And I suppose the Navy's officer/chief service dress white, which is supposed to be the equivalent of civilian business-wear but is really not worn for everyday duty like the blues. In the British forces, the Army has a vast array of distinctive and traditional dress uniforms, and there are ceremonial guard units in various countires, but for most armed forces around the world the dress uniform is just the service uniform, accessorized with medals, sword or sword belt, white gloves etc.

In real life, Star Trek uniforms are uncomfortable for actors to wear for various reasons. Non stretching fabric stretched across the body. Non breathable fabric worn for hours under hot lights. Multiple layers under hot lights.

However, within the world of Star Trek, the uniforms are supposed to be simple, functional and comfortable. So a dress uniform is, no matter how simple and comfortable, going to be uncomfortable by contrast. First season TNG saw officers switching out form fitting bodysuits for a long coat with a collar. Probably very restricting for people used to wearing what looks to me like comfy work out wear or jammies. Add in the anxiety of going to some formal event, and I could see a dress uni giving at least some Starfleet officers a slight complex.

Then there's the odd chance that the clothing is not replicated anew every morning (see "In Theory", say) - so the "day" clothes might have already undergone enough use to become comfortable, stretching out at all the right places. But the dress blues (or reds or yellows) would see so little use that they still match the measurements given to the replicator by our vain characters, rather than their true dimensions...

Some people would look weird in Seven of Nine's catsuit. Including me. Who knows if they decide to design tighter dress uniforms for the upcoming movies. You need a trim and fit body for it...... I still prefer the Nemesis dress uniforms over everything else.

I don't mind the Nemesis dress unis, but I am a bit uncomfortable with senior and junior personnel getting different ones (senior officers wear white, junior ones - like the band in Data's singing scene - wear gray). IMHO, dress uniforms should be the same for all.
