Spoilers STAR TREK BEYOND

That look is strictly for Uhura! And maybe Kirk, based upon 50 years of fanfic.

This made me laugh out loud, and I mean in the literal sense. I think I scared everyone in the living room.

The new unis look better outdoors than the shiny-shinies did. Maybe the change was due to so much of the movie taking place outdoors?

I like the new uniforms. They feel TMP-ish to me, and I liked the TMP uniforms save that the bottoms looked like jammies.

It certainly looks like the uniforms may be evolving towards the TMP era.
As to Spock's raised undershirt collar in TMP, I believe it was a purely dramatic reason. It made him look much more uptight and tense than everyone else, which he was given his internal conflict for most of the film.

As I noted in the "Uniform" thread, I think the high collars might be a nod to the original "Cage" uniforms.

Yeah, if Beyond doesn't include an impassioned Chris Pine reading of the Preamble, I'm out.

I think that would be incredibly cool. I might actually mess myself if it were to happen.

Just so I can be *ahem* not be "distracted" during the movie, just where do you live, what theater do you favor, and where do you tend to sit in said theater? ;)

Considering how big a fan Pegg is, I'm hoping to see something fresh that's still a nod-and-a-wink to the good old days.

My guess is that Idris Elba plays the captain of that downed vessel and has done something naughty — Prime Directive violation? — on the planet that Kirk and company have to fix.

Oh, I hope not. That's rather a TOS cliche, and I'm hoping for something new.

Well, it'd certainly be refreshing after the vengeful villain trope that plagues most of the "Star Trek" films since TWOK.

How about if Captain Crash had done something naughty that had nothing to do with the Prime Directive? I'd be interested in that.

Not least because, while Prime Directive Issues are almost a staple of Star Trek, it's kind of lousy as a philosophical debating point. The substance of what we know about it is that it says ``don't screw with people for no good reason'', and admirable as that is, that isn't much to argue over. If our characters can't argue specifics then the debate is this foggy, inconclusive muddle. The argument gets about as specific as it can in Next Generation's ``Pen Pals'' and Enterprise's ``Dear Doctor'', and those arguments didn't get past the Intro Philosophy class discussion level.

It's the "Every captain other than Kirk is a villain/lunatic" cliche that I'm tired of, with or without a Prime Directive violation involved. Remember how thrilled everyone was about Captain Robau before the '09 movie came out? A lot of people liked the idea of seeing another Starfleet captain who was actually heroic. Then he turned out to be pretty useless and got killed after just a few minutes. It'd be nice to see a guest captain who gets to make a better showing of himself (or herself, speaking more generally).

It's too easy to make Kirk look heroic by making other captains crazy or evil. It's more impressive if the other captain is heroic in their own right, but Kirk still outshines them -- or if they work well together as a team without Kirk being overshadowed.

They don't need a second heroic captain in a movie - they need an antagonist for Kirk.

One has to wonder, if the studio's happy with Lin's work here - and I'm willing to enter an early bet that they're over-the-top thrilled with it - will they go ahead and and re-sign him and let him set up the next movie with a scene at the end of this one? It would be a first for Star Trek, but it's worked pretty well lately for Fast & Furious.

To quote Boss Nass... "Mesa liken Dees"

Agreed. Why not have a couple of Starfleet captains working together, trying to solve a problem, and the problem just keeps escalating?
