Dialogue You'd Like to See Slipped into Novels

Had the privilege of listening to David Mack's interview with the folks at Literary Treks about his new book--one of the best interviews I've ever heard. I'd highly recommend it if you haven't already listened to it.

Anyway, one of the many topics that came up was David's use of lines from various films or television shows and his use of these lines as homages or references to the shows or films themselves (i.e., Animal House). His comments got me thinking about lines of dialogue I'd love to see included in Trek novels referencing other works of fiction (novels, movies, TV, etc.).

• "Heeellloooo!" (Seinfeld)
• "Newman/Whatley!" (Seinfeld)
• "No soup for you!" (Seinfeld)
• "Time out!" (Saved by the Bell)
• "Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey! What is going on here?" (Saved by the Bell)
• "Must go faster! Must go faster!" (Jurassic Park)

Incidentally, the perennial "very bad feeling about this" line in the SW franchise may be an allusion to Poole's line, in reference to HAL (in a powered-down pod, with Bowman, unaware that HAL was reading their lips, in the scene just before intermission), "I've got a bad feeling about him."

I'm irritated enough that it's become a catchphrase in Doctor Who (when the original line in "Blink" was so great in context), let alone wanting to read it in another franchise.

When I finally got the in-joke during a reread, I laughed.

How about an Academy professor (preferably with a strong mid-Atlantic accent) dropping a Kingsfield-ism from The Paper Chase, perhaps one of these:

• Speak louder, Mr. Hart! Fill the room with your intelligence!
• Do you know what a deadline is? It's a line drawn 'round a prison, and any prisoner crossing that line is subject to disaster, and sudden death.

Especially in an Abramsverse story, that first one would work really well with "Mr. Kirk" instead of the original "Mr. Hart."
