Brands that were once popular....

There was a Ben Franklin's in Pompton Lakes NJ, as far as I know it was the only one around. When I got my very first apartment, I got some stuff from there for it.

We had a Ben Franklin and a five & dime store in the 70's.

The five & dime store was the one in the old building with the creaky wooden floors.

We also had a Ben Franklin here when I was a child, in a little shopping center when this was a small town. It also seemed rather old and rickety, and full of wonderful stuff, small things that a kid could afford.

Much later we had a Ben Franklin craft store, but that was an entirely different entity. Also now gone.

I love to know that others remember and took pleasure! And I love your "Location", retrograde! God, how I would love a "Foundation" movie! :techman:

I bet you can still remember some or all of what you bought! :)

I can still smell the smell and hear the creak of the floor as I walked around!

Does anyone here remember Flakey Jakes? It was a build your own burger/potato/salad/sundae restaraunt here in the Pacific Northwest. You would walk in and there in a display case was the burger patties; there were two sizes 6-8oz., and behind that was the walk in freezer with the sides of beef. You would choose the patty you want and they would grill it right in front of you along with baking the bun, then they would hand it to you and you would go to the condiment bar and add your own toppings. It was the same with the potatoes and the rest.
We also had Pizza and Pipes - A place where you could order a pizza and sit and watch silent movies while someone played an old Wurlitzer as accompaniment.

We had a "trading post", basically a junk store with a few treasures here & there.

That place was already beyond old in the 70's & 80's and had spots on the wooden floor you literally couldn't walk for fear of being in the basement or whatever was down there.

It had that musty smell, but as far as that smell goes, I'm always reminded of the bike store where we bought my first bike.

An odor can be a powerful memory trigger.

I do, it was everything to start an apartment. So garbage cans for the kitchen and bathroom. Dishes drain, shower curtain, cleaning supplies and the like. All the stuff was light blue, remember like it was yesterday.

I remember them both! I was unnerved by the organ, but loved the bubbles and Disney characters at Pizza and Pipes. And I drive by where a Flakey Jake's used to be.

American Family Cleaning Products

I remember the tall-ish red liquid dish detergent bottles on our sink, when I was but a tadling of a lad. I also remember the big cake soap bars, because my mother frequently washed out my filthy little mouth with them.

As in, often.

I was discovering expletives, and using my new knowledge to the fullest in the neighborhood.

Sadly, there were Neighbor Narcs who ratted my out to my mom.

I can still taste that nasty taste.!

May have been mentioned before, but I miss "Ben Franklin" it was a "five and dime" in the Chicago Market. Maybe elsewhere, too? Creaky wood floors and a great "old" smell. They had all kinds of cool stuff.

The Ben Frankin in my town only closed a couple of years ago. It was doing well, too, but Hobby Lobby had just opened and I guess corporate didn't want to compete.

My mother's choice in that department was Ivory soap...:scream:

Remember when Amway was kind of big, my mother was an Amway representative. In fact, if their was a get-rich-quick or pyramid scheme, my mother was usually a part of it. Like Discovery Toys and Avon.

Helmann's Fat-Free Ranch Dressing. I used to buy it like crazy, and then it disappeared from the Chicago Market. My salads have not been the same! :sigh:

The gaming bust of the 80's happened. Technically, it's still around, but in name only. It's now owned by a French company that was previously known as Infogrames that rebranded itself into Atari when it bought the Atari brand.
