Star Wars: Episode VII: The Nerd Rage Awakens

I'm trying to stay grounded. But Ep 7 is giving me a feeling like I've only had the first time I watched The OT, and the first time I played kotor.

Cool. Even if you don't buy it being better than ANH or ESB, it's nice to hear that the movie at least seems to work really well.

I have no doubt that it's beautifully made. That much is clear from all the effort they've put into it. I can only hope that the story is as good as the production. I'm optimistic. JJ is a good director, and what I've seen certainly looks promising.

If it is as good as the Trek movies (which I believe were more SW than ST) then it is going to be good.

ANA, (All Nippon Airways) Japan's largest airline, is painting its Dreamliner planes flying Tokyo-Vancouver, starting in Rocktober! Pretty cool, I think!

There's also a BB-8 one.

Minor Spoiler about BB-8 according to the toy sold here on ebay
BB-8 is Poe Dameron's loyal droid.

So based on that I have the following theory about the film:

It begins with that raid that we see in the first teaser with the First Order Stormtroopers (hatch opening.) In that raid, Poe Dameron, who is on a mission sent by Princess Leia (as revealed at comic con) is captured by the First Order and is escorted by one of their troopers down the hall of a Star Destroyer (behind the scenes reel) and that stormtrooper is Finn, who learns something about the Resistance and their cause and decides he's playing for the wrong team. He sets up a means to escape, and manages to get away and crash on Jakku with BB-8 in tow. However, he is unconscious as a result (the TIE fighter crash) but BB-8 had wandered off the previous night and found himself captured by scavengers, including Rey (the Empire magazine photo).

In any case, I believe that majority of the footage we've seen all happens within the first twenty minutes of the film. Smart marketing there

Interesting the promo material keeps suggesting Daisy Ridley's character is a Skywalker.

Well as soon as she was cast most people's reaction (myself included) was: "Hey, she looks an awful lot like a cross between Carrie Fisher and Natalie Portman, no?"
Seemed like a bit of a forgone conclusion right from the off. Unless it's some intentional misdirection, which given that this is a J.J. Abrams joint is certainly a possibility.

So yeah, either she is a Skywalker/Solo, or they just want us to think she is.

Drew Struzan: ‘Force Awakens’ May Be The Best ‘Star Wars’ Yet

“I’ve never worked with J.J before and so we started working on it and he showed me like half the movie and it was just… a wonderful film and I know it’s going to be grand. I got to read the script and subsequently I’ve seen half of it and I can tell you and the fans this, Honest to God, it is far and away probably going to be the best Star Wars you’ve ever seen. … Well, it’s beautifully made and it’s a wonderful story. … "

For the record Steven Spielberg made similar comments about The Phantom before it came out, so he comments should be taken in the context they're given. As curious as I am about the movie, I'm still not holding my breath yet.

And if the rumor that Kylo Ren is also the child of one of the OT heroes is also true that could well mean that the movie's lead villain and Rey are actually brother and sister, and that EU fans may well get their Solo Twins on the big screen but with different names.

But Finn is wielding a lightsaber and is apparently our Luke skywalker for this trilogy

That's just his alleged role and story arc in the Sequel Trilogy. He's the Luke character of these new movies. That doesn't mean that Rey isn't the biological offspring of a Solo or Skywalker and she has a different arc. Family heritage doesn't necessarily have to coincide with the lead hero role.

Don't forget, Leia is also a Skywalker but she wasn't the main hero of the OT. That role went to her twin brother.

I don't think Ridley looks anything like Fisher or Portman; unless white and brunette are your only criteria. And nobody would ever cast a main role based on if they look similar. However narratively speaking it is pretty likely that she is a Skywalker.

And Ridley is carrying around what looks to be an ancient light saber staff.

If that is Luke/Anakin's lightsaber in the trailers and is the one Finn is holding, I hope there's a reasonable explaination for how it survived Besbin.
