Spin-offs you'd love to have seen

This idea struck me reading a thread in the Movies board.

If you could've created any spin-off from TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY or ENT, what would it have been? Any combination of characters, new and old, any genre. Just go nuts!

The idea I had would be to re-write the end of TSFS. With a series that went off on a tangent focusing on David Marcus, Saavik (played by Kirsty Alley again) and the teenaged Spock (with his adult mind returned to him), onboard a small scout/science ship.

In my own case, DS9 with COL Kira remaining as the commander of the station with some minor TNG characters filling in roles of security chief, chief of operations, etc...

The TNG characters on Into Darkness' Earth, living regular lives. Worf taking a bus. Picard and Riker stuck in traffic in a ground car. Data finding work as a meter maid. Beverly gets lost in the city while out shopping. It would be glorious.

I had an idea back in 2000 for a series set immediately after VOY about a civilian starship crewed by former Maquis now forced to make a living in a somewhat lawless corner of space just outside Federation territory. The captain was a former Starfleet officer--Lt. Commander Calvin Hudson--who had burned his uniform to join the Maquis only to eventually see his entire cell wiped out during the Dominion War. Having lost faith in the Federation, Hudson and his crew set out just trying to survive on the final frontier on their own as a ship-for-hire. One job at a time. One day at a time. And with Starfleet something to avoid at times.

Then Firefly came along a couple of years later, and I said "So much for that idea..."

Inspector Tuvok.

A standard detective series that just happens to use the Star Trek universe as a backdrop.

Voyager did a few Tuvok investigates type episodes and though the mystery element was virtually non-existent, I still like the idea of it. In fact, they could do it with any character (Vulcan probable would work best).

How about demoted Robert Wesley takes over starbase 12 along the neutral zone with a mix of Star Fleet and civilians

Maybe the cast of Lower Decks moving up through the ranks and eventually being put on a ship of their own. They had great chemistry.

How about Zefram Cochrane's backstory? It could take place between 2040 and 2140, showing the buildup to the events in First Contact and the aftermath, with flashbacks and flashforwards. You could bring back characters like Lily Sloane, Soval, and Henry Archer.

If budget were no option, I'd watch the shit out of a show set on Cardassia. Especially if it adapted some of the excellent stories that have been told in the novels.

The adventures of Captain Okona might of been fun, surprised they never used him on DS9.

He teams up with with Vash, or maybe a few ex Starfleet types.

Or a Star Fleet Medical show out on the boarders of the badlands

I hoped we'd get a tv series set in the era of the TOS movies. Captain Sulu was talked about a lot but it never happened. I'd have preferred that to Enterprise which never seemed like a prequel to me.

A spin off I'd like to see today is one which features the crews of TNG, DS9 and VOY as an emsemble cast with stories spread throughout the Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Delta Quadrants. With the use of transwarp drive it would make it easy for characters to come and go as the story permits. DS9 could be the port of call for the Enterprise-E, Voyager and the Defiant-A to return to.

A spinoff of young Spock growing up on Vulcan and how he deals with being half-human, especially in relation to the other children who were fully Vulcan. Plus it would have been nice to see more of Sarek and Amanda.

I would watch a whole series about Spock's involvement with the Romulan underground.

Actually, I would watch a whole series about all of Spock's post-TOS adventures.

"Assignment: Earth," of course, featuring Gary Seven, Roberta Lincoln, and Isis.

I'm frankly amazed that nobody has suggested this yet.

  • a USS Reliant series set between 2280-2285
  • an Enterprise-C series set in the 2330s
  • a TV series depicting the events of Kirk's second five-year mission (post-TMP)
  • a West Wing type of series depicting events at the highest levels of the Federation government during the Zife and Bacco administrations
  • a "Yesterday's Enterprise" mini-series (maybe online only) focusing on other canon characters (what were Sisko and Janeway up during the Klingon war?)
