I think he was considering doing the 50th, but made some creative demands I think that couldn't be worked out with Moffat. So instead we got Parting of the Ways stock footage and his face cg'd in over Hurt regenerating and in the Doctor's dream at the end.

That's the first time I've heard that it was down to creative demands. I've always heard that he met for lunch with Moffatt, who tried to coax him back and set out his (then) outline for the 50th. Chris went off and thought about it but ultimately decided that he simply didn't want to return to DW and wished Moffatt well when he let him know.

I could well be wrong of course - do you have a link to the creative demands version?

This is correct.

This is not. You're conflating another incident: at the BFI screening for the ninth Doctor with Joe Ahearne, Eccleston sent a message along that Ahearne was fantastic, and that if he directed the 100th anniversary special, Eccleston would be there with his walker. It was not based on a genuine demand.

I always thought that he and Moffat had two meetings about the 50th, not just one. I took that to mean he was close to doing it, then ultimately decided not to. That's why I was incredibly disappointed at the time.

I doubt we'll ever see him back on DW. The 50th was the best chance. In any case, it was nice of him to do this for that couple.

Though I believe that's just a rumour (possibly as a result of Chinese whispers over him joking he'll do the 100th anniversary special with Ahearne directing it in that BFI message) rather than a hard fact.

lovely video, and indeed, he is supposed to be perfectly polite and nice to fans, regardless of what actually went on back in the day. His main issue seems to be with journalists who keep asking about things he's been fairly public about not wanting to go into huge depth on, and that's fair enough.

While he's polite enough to not give any particularly juicy details, particularly since the execs in question aren't there to defend themselves, he does at least confirm some of what we've always suspected, that there were some top people that he didn't get along with for some reason.

Although, I would disagree that he "overpitched the comedy." I liked the fact that his character had those 2 extremes. Yes, he was scarred & depressed after the Time War and had a moody expression and the leather jacket and gave off a general stay-away vibe. But sometimes we would see that manic grin of his and he would play something just a little bit goofy or just a little bit off kilter. And it was those moments that would remind me of Tom Baker or Patrick Troughton or Sylvester McCoy and would reassure me that this was in fact the same show as it always was and not some "dark, gritty" reboot.

Yea, it's easy to see (or remember) him as a distant prick, but, if you really think about it and remember him thoroughly, he was often a whole lot more of a "Teddy Bear" then you'd think at first glance.

Indeed, I made a post expressing similar sentiments back when Day of the Doctor first aired and everyone was throwing conniptions over him not taking part in the celebrations.

This part, especially sums my attitude up perfectly:
