Fantastic Four reboot-- Casting, Rumors, Pix, ect;

They count this as a "positive" review!

It's up to 12% now, double figures! It's coming back!! ;)

Mm, anyone else feel almost "obligated" to see it, simply because I'm so used over the last few years to going to see most comic book, especially Marvel, movies at the cinema? Yet this... I just have no enthusiasm for whatsoever. Last time I felt this way was for Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengenance... and boy am I now glad I didn't pay to see that.

Was Josh Trank in line to direct the (planned) 2017 sequel btw? If so I can only assume he'll probably be replaced now (if it still goes ahead)

I don't think so. He was in line to direct one of the Star Wars anthologies. I believe that would conflict. But he "stepped down" from the project to pursue other projects. I'm guessing Disney saw a cut of F4.

I'm still waiting for the "real" reviews to come in and hear a few opinions of people who have actually seen it. My enthusiasm for this movie dwindled in recent weeks; this after actually becoming interested in it again after the release of the first promotional materials.

There's "real" reviews from "real" film critics all over the net at this point. I just googled "fantastic four review" under the "news" tab and these are what came up first:

I'll read through some of these tonight.

I went to the first showing this morning. Not good.
I'm morbidly curious to hear more. I guess it's time for somebody to make the post-release thread, if anyone gives enough a crap to bother.

Second! Can someone who likes to do these things set up the grading and discussion thread?

I'd do it myself, but (a) I'd feel hypocritical, since I have no intention of seeing it, and (b) whatever passes for the film's fanbase probably wouldn't be amused by the facetious polling options that I have in mind.

Well, I started the anticipation thread, so it would normally fall to me, but I have no intention of seeing it either.

'Fantastic Four' review: the Marvel reboot for pretty much no one to ...

It is unfortunate that Marvel's name is being thrown around as if they had anything to do with this.

The rumor I heard was that Simon Kinberg got rid of him because of his antics during the F4 production. Kiberg is a working on both the Fox Marvel movies, and the Star Wars franchise stuff.

I think it will be a long, long time before he's let near a big budget film again.

I'd also be interested to know how much of what ended up in the final film was what he shot. Judging by the reviews the last third of the film seems to have been changed completely.

I don't think this thread has ever been so busy as it's been since the negative reviews began flooding in. I wonder would it have been so busy had they been good?

As someone who's held out hope for this film for a while, my mood is getting increasingly pessimistic. Add in the fact that the knives seem to be out for it - the car crash radio interview where the interviewer complimented Kate's feet seems for some reason to be held against the film, then there was the Esquire cover story describing Miles as 'dickish' and it seems hard to see how the film can overcome the apparent ill-will that's out there. That's even if it's any good, which, if reviews and word of mouth are accurate, seems unlikely.

I've been listening to a recent interview that Trank did with Kevin Smith - Trank was enthusing all over the place about the movie, and couldn't have been more complementary of Kinberg.

So, at least one person has enthused...

My take on it from the other thread :

I was looking forward to this - I was certainly expecting it to exceed the generally low expectations people had for it. Unfortunately, it didn't.

I didn't like Miles Tellar or Jamie Bell but not to the extent that they spoiled the movie. It did that all by itself. It wasn't a complete turkey (it wasn't that interesting), but it was dull, terribly uninspired and utterly joyless.

The film was pretty grey both in tone and colour scheme. It was hard to relate to the characters and the plot failed to involve - couple that with some suspect C.G. and you aren't exactly looking at a hit movie.

The effects were a real surprise. The 'planet' didn't seem well realised - unconvincing and lacking sharpness. The Torch also didn't come over well - the flying sequences looked like a red flame poorly rendered and superimposed badly on the sky - it didn't look like they belonged together. Close-ups of the Torch were variable - some shots were O.K., some just looked badly animated.

Doom - Doom was awful. Despite a decent performance from Toby Kebbell, he looked ridiculous. The head was bulbous and overlarge. The effect was of a slightly melted action figure. Scary...

Overall, it was a five or (being generous) six out of ten. It's hard to see where they go from here - I can see three real options :

1. Hand the rights back to Marvel (who could do with Galactus, the Surfer and the Skrulls too) to do it properly.

2. Do a 'Sony' and keep the rights but hand the creative side back to Marvel.

3. Hand the sequel to Brian Singer who knows how to make a superhero film. A truly great follow-up could rescue the series.

Due to the friction between Fox and Marvel, 1. and 2. seem unlikely, so I'd say Singer is in the frame for F.F.2...
