7th Doctor Sylvester McCoy Doesn't Want a Female Doctor for Doctor Who

Apologies if this has already been posted...

In an interview with The Mirror, Sylvester McCoy shared his thoughts on why he thinks making the Doctor a woman would be a bad idea. Put simply, he said, “I’m sorry, but no – Doctor Who is a male character, just like James Bond. If they changed it to be politically correct then it would ruin the dynamics between the doctor and the assistant, which is a popular part of the show.” He went on to add, “I support feminism, but I’m not convinced by the cultural need of a female Doctor Who.”

Hmm, I'm not sure what to make of this. On the one hand, McCoy's right and this would mess up the character's dynamic with the companions. On the other hand, it might be an amazing thing to see, as with the idea of a Doctor of color that's been bandied about. What do others think?

duh......uhm....messing up a shows dynamic often makes it actually MORE interesting....

Re: 7th Doctor Sylvester McCoy Doesn't Want a Female Doctor for Doctor

Make it a male companion. Boom. Problem solved.

Re: 7th Doctor Sylvester McCoy Doesn't Want a Female Doctor for Doctor

Or give a female Doctor a male and female companion ala Jamie/Zoe or Amy/Rory?

Peter Davison has said the same thing. But as soon as a lady is cast as the Doctor, they'll all change their tunes and rave about how wonderful she is.

If people want a female time-lord, find a way to bring back Romana and be done with it.

Unless she's terrible but hopefully if/when they do cast a woman they'll pick the right woman for the job :techman:

Re: 7th Doctor Sylvester McCoy Doesn't Want a Female Doctor for Doctor

If she's good, I will like it, if she's bad I won't. It being a female vs a male Doctor is immaterial to me. I'm more concerned that they would write the character differently because it's a female, and that the stories would then suffer. I wouldn't want a male companion as "the muscle" a la Gan in Blake's Seven or Willy Armitage in Mission Impossible, and I would be equally disinterested in making the male companion foolish or clumsy. Strax is fun in small doses, but I don't think I could take a full time companion like that.

That's just wimping out.

Indeed. Romana ended up where she was because she felt needed there, a very brave thing in and of itself.

There's never such a thing as closure in Dr. Who continuity. How many times have the Daleks been wiped out, for instance? Each time hyping the idea that THIS time it's the end of them. If they want to reintroduce her, they'll find a way to rationalize it.

Re: 7th Doctor Sylvester McCoy Doesn't Want a Female Doctor for Doctor

Wasn't Evil of the Daleks suppose to be their last serial? At least one of the last.

Re: 7th Doctor Sylvester McCoy Doesn't Want a Female Doctor for Doctor

Yeah, that was the intent...at the time.

But as with so many things in show business, new showrunners meant a change in opinion. Eventually, Barry Letts brought them back in "Day of the Daleks", taking advantage of the newest series innovation, color. Funny thing, the original outline did not include the Daleks. It was simply a more straighforward tale of pre-destination paradox. Soldiers sent back in time to stop WWIII actually trigger the conflict. Some debate the Daleks were kinda' "tacked on".

Sincerely,

Bill

Yeah, there's no reason why it couldn't work. Just cast the right actress and give her an interesting companion whatever the gender.

But before they cast a woman, can Doctor 13 be Alexander Siddig please? :techman:

Oh I don't even know anything about Romana. Barely watched the show before 2005.

What I meant was, bringing back some old supporting character is insufficient. Time for a change for the doctor!

Is there no safe place from this debate?

As long as they can find an actress who is credible in the role I honestly don't care.

Missy was bad enough, lets not ruin the main character too!

It's just being different and PC for the sake of it! Just leave things be.
