Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

How about something less aggressively western and English and include some books from other languages/cultures, hmmm?
Yeah, how about it? Name some!
  • The Transcendent theosophy in the Four Journeys of the intellect by Mulla Sadrā (ملا صدرا‎)
  • रामायणम् (The Ramayana)
  • Πλάτων: Πολιτεία (Plato: Republic)
  • Benim Adım Kırmızı by Orhan Pamuk
Off the top of my head.

Excellent.

I've been thinking about it, has there ever been anything but English seen on any display or prop on any Starfleet vessel, ever? I mean, I get that we've seen Klingon and Vulcan and Bajoran languages, but whenever we see anything Starfleet-related it's been English, not French or German or Russian or Japanese or Swahili or anything.

Just an observation.

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

I think it's the only instance, though, and I chalk it up as another bit of Season 1 "We're not 100% sure what we're doing yet" fumbling about that also brought us man-skirts. :p

It's no different to the references to Leningrad in TOS and TVH, it is further evidence that Star Trek isn't our world. Some form of USSR still exists in the 24th century!

I claim that Kirk and Co. created the Mirror Universe via Edith Keeler, so anything's possible :)

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Nah, the Mirror Universe has a better space program than we do. :p

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

The Mirror Universe is the one where Twinkies really did cease to exist.

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Just to be different, how about a Harry Potter book?

Or a model of a TIE fighter?

TIE Fighter would be okay. Millennium Falcon would be better, in a 'respectful nod to the competition' way. Or Forbidden Planet's C-57D as a 'nod to our roots.' Harry Potter would look out of place on an early 1980's TV/movie set, though.

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Dear Donny,
Once again, this is more of an excuse to say how marvellous your recreations of the Enterprise are than anything else. I really enjoy catching up with this thread.

As for books, I’d guess that the Officers’ Lounge will have more generic books than the ones in private quarters, and angled towards leisure reading more than anything else. Surely John Gill’s history books have been allowed to quietly go out of print by the TWOK era, but maybe there are hardbound, library editions of the works of those twentieth century “greats” Harold Robbins and Jacqueline Susann?

On a more serious note, perhaps you’d consider including some of the works written by “Star Trek” script writers? (Sort of suggested by cardinal biggles upthread, with the Nicholas Meyer book.) Psycho, When HARLIE was One, I am Legend and Bug Jack Barron occurred to me off the top of my head, but there’s a lot of scope there, it seems to me.

The final say, of course, is entirely up to you.

Best wishes,
Timon

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

All great suggestions which will really help me fill in those bookshelves. I am not, however, gonna add any cross-franchise items such as a TIE Fighter. Sorry.

Just FYI for everyone, I'm taking a break on this project for a couple weeks, as next Tuesday I head to Vegas for The Official Star Trek Convention again this year. I've got a ton of real life stuff to do before then. Ha. I'll be sure to post pictures on this thread of all my fun times. I'll return to work shortly on this project when I get back.
