Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

 Is it wrong to laugh at that mental picture?

I honestly don't know... It vexes me... :guffaw:

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

One does wonder where on deck three those walls go...

On an absurd note, I imagine some poor schlubb getting pinned and crushed as the panels descend. :wtf:
Scene-Redshirt Heaven:
Kelso: Look, a new kid.
Mallory: Let's go ask him how he bought it.
Kelso: Hey, kid, welcome. Don't feel bad; exploring the Universe is dangerous.
Mallory: So how did it happen? Disruptor? Alien entity? Beamed into space?
New Kid: No.
Mallory: Poison plant? Explosive rock? Pushed off a ledge?
New Kid(mumble): No.
Kelso: Okay, how?
New Kid(sheepishly): Viewscreen wall. Squished me flat.
Kelso and Mallory: Buwhahahahhahahahahaha.

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

I have insets on the other sides where decoration will end up (nautical stuff, tbd). They have to be insets so that the decor will fit inside and won't get knocked off when the bulkheads drops into the floor. This is, coupled with the depth of the viewscreens as is, is why the bulkheads are a bit thick.

That makes sense. I figured you only needed to make it as deep as the inset on one side but didn't think about what was the other side.

@BK613 - that's so wrong :lol:

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Spending some time on the finer details now, starting with books. Both Probert and Johnson's schematics indicate a bookshelf on the forward wall of the privacy lounge, and I definitely want to bring that to life. But the question is: what kind of books would be on the Enterprise? Hard-bound? Paperback? Would there be the classics, among some tech manuals?

We see generic hard-bound books on board The Enterprise since the early days of TOS, and we even see a "library" on the Enterprise E in Insurrection (a deleted portion of that scene reveals books behind plexiglass on shelves). And in The Wrath of Khan, we see several books on a shelf in Khan's abode, as well as Spock giving Kirk an antique copy of A Tale of Two Cities.

I know I wanted a copy of Moby Dick lying around the lounge, as an Easter Egg if anything. I did some research determined that the copy in Khan's abode is this edition. I thought it would be cool to have this very same copy laying around. I also determined what edition Inferno was as well, and threw that one in. I'm planning to determine what edition the Paradise Lost/Paradise Regained book is, and it will join the latter two.

I also thought I should throw in copies of Mr. Scott's Guide To The Enterprise and The Starfleet Technical Manual, since these two books were very influential on me throughout my childhood, and very well were a huge inspiration for my projects. These are not serious indications of what I think would be on board the ship, but more just tips of the hats to their creators.

I'm going to create a lot of generic hard-bound books to go on the book shelves, with a complete set of Horatio Hornblower volumes, as a nod to Nick Meyer's view of Star Trek as a Horatio Hornblower in space kind of deal.

What do you think? I've got the books in question in plain view for the moment, but their locations will be a little more discreet in the final build.

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Interesting. I'd think hardbacks were the norm.

Hemingway's 'Old Man and the Sea' would be a nice naval addition. 'War and Peace.' Perhaps some art books - Chagall?

Another thing that doesn't change over time are history books; going over military strategies and naval encounters would be an interesting pastime.

Empires of the Sea: the Final Battle for the Mediterranean, 1521-1580 by Roger Crowley

Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee: An Indian History of the American West by Dee Brown

And just because: Douglas Adams' The Complete Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy

As another tip of the hat to Meyer, you might also include a volume of Shakespeare, a Sherlock Holmes collection, or perhaps even this book.

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

How about something less aggressively western and English and include some books from other languages/cultures, hmmm?

I think giving some examples would probably work better than shaming us.

Although you're not wrong, I'm sure Chekov would appreciate 'War and Peace' being in its native Russian (Война и миръ, Voyna i mir) - though you'd likely see that on the Reliant, not the Enterprise.

You could have Vulcan literature, possibly also Bonner the Stochastic's book that contains 'Let Me Help.'

I play on including some Vulcan themed novels as well, such as Vulcan Love Slave and The Teachings of Surak

That's the guy who came up with the under-the-door shoulder roll that Geordi pulled off. It became part of the Academy's program after the experiences of that nimble guy on deck three.
