Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

That looks great, Donny! It's a shame they weren't able to realize that room in full scale, but you're doing a great job with it.

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

I'm simply amazed at how fast you create these things.

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Looks very comfortable! Excellent job on Three Backward! ;)

Would the ship's wheel from TFF be out on place on that little podium directly in front of the windows, do you think? Or maybe some other nautical piece of bric-a-brac...

If you're going to read a book in there, some reading light (recycled TOS gooseneck?) would fit nicely beside those sofas.

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

What I find most interesting is that this room could be a TNG room with only minor redressing.

Looks amazing!

I dunno. Let's not forget that the A from ST5 was a totally different ship from the one Donny is modeling, so I don't think the wheel is at all necessary.

What I find most interesting is that this room could be a TNG room with only minor redressing.

Makes sense. Andrew Probert had a heavy hand in designing both shows.

Yeah, I think the ship's wheel would be a bit much. Plus, there is very little room down there as is.

I'm considering what kind of extra decorum to place around to make the area feel a little more TWOK. Right now it feels a little too TMP/TNG for me. I may even change the color scheme to be less TNG.

One of the more "loungier" sets in TWOK is the Starfleet Academy set:

I may borrow that brownish wall texture (and the decor on the wall) behind Spock in the first picture above and implement that into the officer's lounge.

It's difficult, but exciting: I don't have an exact blueprint to go on here (for the first time during this project)...I just have the TMP lounge set, Probert's concept, and Johnson's blueprint. I also have creative license given to me by the fact that this set wasn't seen at all in TWOK so I can change cosmetic things if I wish (much like was done with Kirk's quarters between movies). I'm giving myself a couple days to brain storm and formulate the details before I dive in with the modelling.

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Keeping in mind how Nick Meyer gave the Enterprise a more nautical feel, I think those two pics from the Starfleet Academy lounge are a good place to borrow from. I'd also take cues from Kirk's quarters -- the addition of those storage bins on the wall with their wood panels goes a long way toward making the room seem less sterile.

I'd probably go with adding more wood, some gold or chrome accents. Maybe pick a different color for the chairs -- make the base color some shade of blue rather than orange. I agree that the ship's wheel from TFF would be too much for this room, but some nautical-themed wall decor would probably be in order -- maybe a brass sextant or an astrolabe.

You just hit a lot of my thinking points, cardinal biggles! I've been toying with the idea of changing the chairs to a blue similar to that of the bridge chairs in TWOK...a very faded blue.

Right now I've got a white/tan/brown/orange scheme, which reflects the TMP nature of the set. But I'm thinking maybe an off-white/rosewood/brass/faded blue scheme now to make it more nautical/TWOKian.

Maybe a painting of the sailing ship Enterprise? I've got this one in mind:

^I see this, and I think of Nick Meyer saying "Gunboat Diplomacy" all throughout the commentary.

I just don't want to make it too "Captain Al's Seafood Restaurant" at the same time. Haha. So I'll go about this very carefully.

I'm also gonna have books on the shelves in the lounge...and I'm thinking of sprinkling in all the overt literary references Nick Meyer drew from...Moby Dick, Horatio Hornblower, Shakespeare, A Tale of Two Cities...

All this being said, I'm going to save the current TMPish version of the lounge as separate project file, in case I ever want to do a straight TMP version of all these sets (which seems to be logical anyway, given that all I have to do is change cosmetic things). It's very easy to swap out materials and textures in Unreal Engine 4 without having to completely remodel/retexture things, so it'll be a breeze to make cosmetic changes.

I'm all kinds of excited over here.

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

A preliminary test on the new color scheme. I still want to add brass highlights here and there, but I'll have to do additional modelling for these pieces. I also have to change some UV settings of the models so that the woodgrain all flows in a uniform direction (up and down)

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

I think the only thing that doesn't work for me is the new color on the chairs. The blue is a little too subtle, and they kinda look like they're all white.

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

That looks great! The blue contrasts with the wood finish very well, I think.

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Funny...I was just putting my shoes on to leave to go wash the car when I realized that the record player I recently bought my girlfriend is the exact color scheme (minus the brass) that I've changed the lounge to. Ha! Subconscious inspiration?

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

I feel that some of the props/furniture from Kirk's apartment would fit this lounge nicely. Some Rougier lamps would look good, too. They've used those over and over in Star Trek. You could throw in some sailing knots, antique gauges, etc. Just don't add plastic fish. I believe that would be going a little overboard.

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Loving the woodgrain and accents. :techman:

Though it would interrupt the beautiful wood veneer, have you thought about putting some sort of pocketed rail or track in those vertical frames for the recessed bulkheads? It might even ensure a more airtight seal should it become necessary.

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

The TWOK fire extinguisher is terrific. Maybe you should add a smoking section?
