MTV's The Shannara Chronicles-Starring John Rhys-Davies, Manu Bennett

I noticed there doesn't appear to have been a thread for this one yet, so I thought I should start one.
They just held the SDCC panel for this with the cast and creators, which also featured the first trailer.
I've never read the books, but I do like Davies and Bennett, and Gough, Miller and Favreu have all done stuff I like. I also love Teen Wolf, and an very curious to see MTV tackle a LoTR style epic fantasy series.
The trailer is pretty cool IMO.

I'm not a big fan of the books, but that footage looks pretty amazing for an MTV show.

I was wondering if they were going to subtly depict traces of the "ancient" world in that setting, but the CG is obviously showing crumbling skyscrapers and remnants from our current world in the trailer, so I guess "subtle" isn't in the cards.

Definitely excited about this show now.

I'll tune in.

I gotta say, though, I found the evidently unintentional irony at about a minute in really lol-worthy: "... the variety of locations, the beautiful backdrop of New Zealand, it really establishes the world of The Shannara Chronicles in a way that separates it from other genre tales." What other "genre tales" have used New Zealand for their settings, I wonder?

I read a couple of Shannara books ages ago. When did they start? 70s? 80s? Anyway, I'm not exactly a huge fan, but this looks worth checking out, as long as the story doesn't get lost in the OMG theater-worthy SFX.

Every fiber of my being says 'yuck, MTV....'. But that looks very good. Plotwise, generic as heck. One or two actors got me intrigued, and John Favreau seems like a plus as well. So, yeah, willing to give this a shot.

MTV isn't that bad with scripted shows, Teen Wolf and Faking It are both pretty good.

The trailer for Shannara looked good, I'm definitely checking it out.

This has potential. I am guessing they'll play down the elements from the original book that were a tad too similar to LOTR.

They said that their adapting the second book, Elfstones of Shannara, for the series. I don't recall if that'll make it more or less Tolkien-esque.

On that note, I was in the bookstore yesterday and noticed that the publisher has released a tie-in edition of Elfstones with a reminder that it'll soon be an MTV series on the cover. Also, they've re-numbered it as "Book One" in the Shannara series.

But Sword explains not only how Shea got the elfstones but the boudround of the then Shannara universe and why Allanon need him so much. Personally I'm really looking forward to this series it'll be interesting to see where they take the show afer they adapt Elfstones.

Same here. I was dubious about the show being on MTV, despite having waited for years for some form of Shannara to either be done as a movie or a TV series. The actual clips look great and with Terry Brooks being part of the production team as well, I think that the intent of the original novel will be adhered to.

I am really looking forward to seeing the series this next winter.

It will definitely fill in the midwinter hiatus that OUaT and Arrow / Flash will be subjecting us to this year.
