I've been making this comparison for years, thought a video might be fun.

I've long considered Alien: Resurrection Whedon's first draft for Firefly. I know some Whedon fans who don't like the comparison, but I definitely see how the Betty and her crew became the Serenity and her crew.

Yeah, I picked up on this years ago. Ron Perlman's character especially is basically Jayne.

Certainly the most obvious. There is also the black second in command (is that racist of me?) the girly grease-monkey (sexist?) and science experiment bad-ass chick (anti-feminist?) and the love interest pilot.

No cripples in Firefly though (totally not-PC) nor Shepherds in A:R (anti-religious?)

    I'm apparently an asshole btw.

Sounds more like stereotypes (or maybe just archetypes) to me, and that he's just ripped himself off rather than create something original and new. But it's Whedon, so that can't be the case, he poops gold apparently.

He's not infallible, but his particular approach to postmodern genre comedy is pretty great. He is the master of taking predictable clichés and turning them around.

The military ship did have a chapel, so presumably the ship had a chaplain assigned to it, we just never saw him. And yes, I'm sticking with him. As I recall, all the military personnel in that movie were male. There might have been some female scientists, though I'm presuming they civilians hired for the Ripley project.

Hardly a "rip-off." Most likely after writing Resurrection Whedon enjoyed the freighter crew and began thinking about revisiting the concept of a space freighters day-to-day life and the story eventually evolved into Firefly.

Or he'd always had the idea, and adapted it to the Alien universe, the way Ridley Scott did with Avatar.

Okay, so I'm just trying to get this right as I saw Avatar once and absolutely despised it. You're suggesting there are similarities between Avatar and Firefly?

That might make me revisit that movie.

    Do tell.

No, no, similarities between Avatar and Aliens (both James Cameron) just as there are also similarities between Firefly and Alien: Resurrection (both Joss Whedon.)

Each of them was hired to expand on Ridley Scott's Alien universe, and each adapted their pre-existing idea to that universe rather than starting from scratch. That's my theory anyway.

So you meant James Cameron when you said Ridley Scott?

So the only real news here is that someone felt the need to make a YouTube video to highlight the blindingly obvious...
