Star Trek Continues, Episode 4 - "The White Iris"

I always felt it unlikely that Kirk would be impressed by the ability to project holograms with no receiving apparatus give the fact that they've got the transporter!
True. But SF is full of such contradictions. Many advances in science and technology have spin off effects that lead to previously unimagined applications. The fact (in universe) that one can teleport matter (and living matter at that) should mean that something simpler like replicators should easily exist in the TOS era long before TNG. And I argue they probably do even though they're called processors in TOS. It also argues why they can so easily manufacture what they need when such items would not likely be stored for any forseeable purpose.

The same applies to antigrav tech. If you can generate artificial gravity as well as manipulate gravity on a fine scale (such as with the handheld antigrav devices) then you most likely can manipulate antigravity on a gross scale. It's for that reason that I've long thought of the ship's (and shuttlecraft's) impulse drive as actually being antigrav generators.

Meh. If they tell a good story I'm willing to overlook/forgive a lot. They told a good story. I enjoyed it. I would hope that's the most important thing at the end of the day.

See, I feel much the same way. If you can tell a good story, I can forgive a lot. The problem is, I don't think they told a particularly good story this time.

What I really did like about the story was that Kirk was having to deal with some of the baggage he had accumulated over time. I can understand keeping to just a couple to keep the episode from getting out of hand, but there should have been a lot more bits of his history of regrets/losses etc...

No, as mentioned before, the only real problem I had with this episode was having all of this happen by just a bump on the head, something McCoy should have been able to treat blindfolded. A weird alien weapon considering the circumstances would have worked so much better- the attacker was even already holding something he could have just pointed and they add a sound effect.

And that's the great thing about Star Trek these days--with so many semi-pro and fan productions out there, we have an embarrassment of riches to choose from. Not every effort will hit a home run, but when all is said and done, we still come out ahead.

BTW, I just wanted to say that you've made me literally LOL with several of your posts here and in other threads. Keep up the good work.

From Memory Alpha:

Prior to the late 24th century, Federation starships were not equipped with holodecks. (VOY: "Flashback")

There were simply no Holodecks in TOS.

That is meaningless because it's never actually stated onscreen.

WRONG!

Quote from Voyager episode "Flashback":

"No replicators. No holodecks. You know, ever since I took Starfleet history at the Academy, I've always wondered what it would be like to live in those days."

I'd call that pretty conclusive.

I wouldn't, though. Us having an early prototype holographic rec room (we never call it a holodeck), as they did in TAS, doesn't contradict Janeway's statement.

It's like me saying, "It would have been weird to live in the 1920s, because there was no television back then." That's a true statement. But it's also true that inventors had been making early prototypes of televisions for decades before that. Yet nobody would deny that, for all intents and purposes, "there were no TVs in 1920."

I get that some people object to the use of the holo rec room from a storytelling perspective, and that's a valid concern. But I disagree that we've violated canon by including it.

1) Warped9 said my original quote from Memory Alpha was "...meaningless because it's never actually stated onscreen." I was proving him wrong. In that I am 100% correct, and thus the point of my post.

2) As far as actually using the Holodeck in ST: C, well, it is a fan film and so fan service is to be expected. You guys can do whatever you want as it is all for the love of Trek. But don't try and get me to believe it is accurate in canon when there is specific canon saying there were no Holodecks at the time.

Just like we have Scotty specifically stating in "Relics" that there were no counselors in TOS time. Vic using his girlfriend Michelle as a counselor is Fan Service again, which is fine, and to be expected, in a fan film.

BTW, good job directing the last two episodes James. They look fantastic. "Fairest of them all" is one of my favorite fan episodes as well. But you guys need to stop making sequels and follow-ons to TOS episodes.

There is no holodeck in STC.

Given I've only seen maybe about a dozen VOY episodes and then never looked back because I hate migraines I don't worry about it. I completely ignore it anyway along with ENT.

This.

Oh? what was that thing in the teaser to your first episode? Sure looked like a holodeck to me! :)

I corrected your incorrect statement "That is meaningless because it's never actually stated onscreen." by providing the onscreen quote. Your ignorance of Voyager doesn't mean you are right. "My bad" would have been the correct response to being proven wrong.

James Kerwin's response is correct as was my initial reasoning. The facility is not identified as a holodeck but as a prototype. It's consistent with what was seen in TAS even though STC ignores TAS. It also makes sense that prototypes of such tech could have existed even if "holodecks" were not yet in wide use in the TOS era.

Fair enough; however that recreation room certainly gives off a very strong holodeck vibe in this episode, at least from my perspective. I enjoyed it, but it felt very much like TNG in TOS clothing.

Still, I want to thank you both for the work you have done making these episodes and coming here to discuss things. It's very much appreciated.

Call it what you will but it's still connect-the-dot fanwank that plagues fan films.

Perhaps I'm out of the loop. What has Red Omega ever done? Is he/she someone involved with the fan films? If so, which ones?

I don't know; I was thanking James Kerwin, the person I was directly quoting.
