Supreme court of the USA rules on same sex marriage

I think there will be some fallout from this. Expect lots of talk points from the GOP and lots of people's heads exploding in reaction.

This calls for a song! I nominate "Sir Duke", by Stevie Wonder.

"You can feel it all over..."

A good day in the USA. :bolian:

Does this definitively take the decision away from states?

Cuz, y'know, most states have actual problems they should be dealing with.

Hubby's co-worker is a gay man, who married his longtime partner in California. Where we live, Texas, doesn't allow/recognize gay marriage. Recently, our friend's husband became seriously ill and was rushed to the hospital. The hospital staff wouldn't allow our friend to visit his own husband in the ICU; the nurses told him "family only," and since Texas didn't recognize gay marriage, he wasn't family. WTF!!?? Luckily, his husband recovered quickly but the couple were considering leaving Texas after that.

It's downright shameful that it's taken this long but thank GOD, progress has finally happened.

My 11th grade English teacher was a plaintiff in the 10th Circuit case that overturned the same-sex marriage ban in Utah. So, congratulations Ms. Wood! And congratulations to everybody who will now have equal and fair treatment under the law in the United States.

Rational response: I never really thought I'd see this. Not in my lifetime.

Emotional response: 'Bout goddamned time.

Yes. Long story short: the Supreme Court ruled that the 14th Amendment applied and the Constitution (and it's amendments) trump anything the states say.

I like the irony in this statement, as religion is the number one reason why same sex marriage has not progressed for a long time.

I'm an atheist, so to me, it's just a figure of speech, like "Holy Mackerel!" In my eyes, religion has done so much harm to this country that it sickens me...but that's a discussion for another day, another thread. Your mileage may vary.

I'm glad that the Supreme Court did their job today. My only worry now is the back-lash that will inevitably follow.
