Hey maybe the universe is a simulation or a video game.

So our reality is a videogame played by God. Is God's reality also just a video game?

All this does is to add just another level ("God created itself, and then created the universe" on top of "the universe created itself"), but it doesn't answer any sort of question. If we can accept that a God exists out of nothing, why can't we just accept that our universe simply exists out of nothing.

Because people of faith need that to cling onto. Without a god to worship life becomes meaningless.

Which is sad, cause all they are saying is, they they themselves are worthless unless an external purpose is being forced upon them.
And what is even more sad, essentially christians believe that all the good they do is for the glory of god, in other words so god does not feel worthless.

Essentially yes.

I used to be a hard core christian... I even went to the trouble of doing bible college but came away from that experience wanting out of it all...

What got drummed into our heads was that if you are not living your life for god and trying to convert others you are leading a worthless life...

Plus there was the obsession my denomination had with money and wealth.. That often caused many heated arguments.

So, basically, what we believe we know is that once the pimply-faced basement-dweller, known as god, is told to shut off the darn computer and get ready for school... our existence ends?

If I had a kid I'd tell them to play as much on their computer as they could -never mind school, this is important!

One of the alternative theories I have entertained is that God is a scientist and we are a laboratory experiment-see STTNG "Who Watches the Watchers."

Without fun, life is meaningless.

If life is a video game I think I'm losing.
