What are some good movies that take place on only one set/location?

Re: What are some good movies that take place on only one set/location

BTW, this thread should be in TV & Media, not in Misc.

Re: What are some good movies that take place on only one set/location

Tape

The entire film takes place in a single motel room, it's a very good film.

I'd also mention Coherence which mainly takes place within a single house although thre are some scenes shot outside.

The Shining takes place in one location for the most part.

Not sure if this has been linked to already, but...

I was going to suggest films that turned out to be all just a dream -- therefore technically taking place entirely in the dreamer's bedroom/hospital room/whatever -- but most of those that I could find on TV tropes had beginning or ending sequences set elsewhere.

It's a long time since I saw it so I don't remember too well, but would 'One flew over the cuckoo's nest fit?'

I don't think so. As I recall, there's a portion of the film where several of the leads temporarily escape from the institution.

Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? almost qualifies. It takes place entirely in one house except for a brief sequence where the characters drive out to a deserted all-night roadhouse, say a few lines, and drive back home again.

Re: What are some good movies that take place on only one set/location

I daresay a lot of movies based on plays would fit this trope. How about Arsenic and Old Lace? It's all pretty much in one house, isn't it?

Re: What are some good movies that take place on only one set/location

^there are some scenes outside the house but then again, 12 angry men also has a couple of scenes outside the jury room and that still seems to count.

Speaking of Cary Grant, Only Angels Have Wings has a fantastic enclosed atmosphere which I always loved (thought not one location)

Re: What are some good movies that take place on only one set/location

How about Russian Ark? Not only does it take place entirely in the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg, but it's filmed entirely in one uncut, 96-minute take, doing for real what Rope only pretended to do.

Re: What are some good movies that take place on only one set/location

Silent Running isn't confined solely to one set, but the focus for most of the movie is on a single character in the relative confinement of an isolated space station.

Enemy Mine spends most of the movie on a single set, only moving away from it very close to the end of the movie.

Re: What are some good movies that take place on only one set/location

A fair amount of haunted house movies come to mind, but they usually have one or two establishing scenes that take place elsewhere, so if that disqualifies them, oh well. The Haunting, The Legend of Hell House, The Others, The Innkeepers, The Haunted Palace, Fall of the House of Usher are all great, and I don't remember how many of them are confined entirely to the haunted house in question.

I've no doubt you already know this, but hey, Rope did as long takes as their tech allowed.

D'oh, how did I forget Exam - I just watched it a few months ago, and it might well still be on Netflix streaming. Decent flick, made particularly suspenseful by the fact that I didn't know what the MPAA rating was or would be, so I had no idea how violent and/or gory it'd get. (Though I was puzzled as to why, since one of the requirements for winning was to not spoil your paper, no one even tried to spoil another's paper.)

Also, has no one yet mentioned Dogtooth? Two contemporary weirdo parents raise three children in a country estate, telling them only certain death lies outside their estate walls, and drastically limiting their comprehension of the outside world. Shades of the new documentary The Wolfpack.

Sole Survivor, takes place in and around a crashed B25 in the Libyan desert, there might have been a single scene on a air base, I not sure.

Yes, I know, since film reels only lasted 10 minutes. My statement was simply a factual description, not a value judgment. (Russian Ark could do it because it was shot on digital video and saved directly to a high-capacity hard drive being carried behind the Steadicam operator.)
