David Strathairn as Whistler. I always thought his "playing blind" performance was one of the best I've ever seen.

I always wondered if he was coached by actual blind people on what to do. Like that guy in Covert Affairs who plays Augie. He does it so well.

At the time, I didn't know anything about David Strathairn, so I thought he was actually blind. In my defense, I was 12 at the time this movie premiered, but still, I think he did a terrific job.
Mother was also awesome. I loved his conspiracy theories about the Apollo moon landings, and such. Dan Aykroyd played it faultlessly. Of course, one of my favorite lines in the film: "We got bupkis! We turn ourselves in now, they'll give us twenty years in the electric chair!"

I love that line.
I am watching it again tonight.
I also like the scene where the guys talk Redford through convincing Janek's girlfriend not to blow the whilstle.
"Be a beacon?"
And of course the man who played Janek is now Harvey Bullock...I feel very old!
And was it Mother that says "and give him head whenever he wants" to Redford to say to her.....
I'm surprised no one has mentioned leading lady Mary McDonnell. One of my favorite performances of hers pre-Battlestar.
I liked Liz a whole bunch..
She was cool. That Elena woman wasn't too bad either and she was a redhead which is a bonus.
Mary McDonnell in Major Crimes seems rather hot. Am I bad for liking an older lady in that way?

For me, what's great about this movie is the charisma of the cast and their chemistry together. But you know what's really wonderful about it? Nobody suddenly becomes a superlative ninja-like action hero halfway through the movie. Everyone has skills and everyone gets to use them, but each character also has their limitations. That's what makes the scene where River Phoenix crashes out of the ceiling onto a bad guy's head so charming--he's not an action hero at all! (I love his line here, "Hey, that's not easy, what I just did!")
Nobody's a super hero, but boy were there some epic scenes.. I especially loved Whistler driving through the car park. "Go left, no my left... Right. Right! RIGHT!"

My favorite part of that scene was Whistler's wish:
Whistler: I want peace on Earth and good will toward men.
Abbott: We're the United States government, we don't do that sort of thing!
