Arm the decanonizer!

Ghost

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
Sir, the decanonizer is armed and ready” The crew man in front of you tells you as his colleague is working on the control panel that operates the mighty machine that fills most of the room and that can cut through time and space, removing, objects, people, and even ideas completely from existence and out of everyone's mind but yours.

“Excellent” You respond as you pat the crew member on the shoulder, “Now it is time to come to go back in Star Trek's lore and correct history to make it work the way it should have.

You take place in front of the machine and start operating the joysticks that control the emitter of the device and target it at Star Trek.
“Take this!” You yell as you press the fire buttons on the joystick, making the machine fire.

Heh, silly little introduction but I do so love an entertaining opening. But anyway image if you as a Star Trek fan get the chance to go back and change parts of any of the shows or movies which you felt had a detrimental effect on that story or even the Star Trek universe in general.
This doesn't just have to be single idea within a story, it can even be a story (episode or movie) itself if you feel it is a complete waste. I'll go first.

I would really like to eliminate the Borg Queen from First Contact and subsequent Voyager as I feel that the introduction of the Queen helped dismantle the concept behind the Borg Collective.

Despite what the cyborgs have gone through since TNG I still love the Borg as one of Star Trek's biggest antagonist as they were so much the 'other' compared to humans and most of the ST species.Their ideology, their culture, their mentality, here was something really menacing that did not stick to most antagonist trademarks. They weren't out to do evil for the sake of evil (though I can not help but not completely eliminate ego or power hunger), heck they even think what they are doing is improving the quality of life for all the beings it assimilates, taking away the chaos in their lives and replacing it with order and structure.

But then we got the Borg Queen in First Contact. I actually liked the character at first I admit and really did see it as a sort of shell the mind of the entire Collective was running through, creating a visage of individuality. But even in First Contact it sadly quickly went to the deep end like trying to seduce Data (the Borg considered him obsolete in the new order, didn't they?), being annoyed at Picard for forgetting her and so on.

And this crap continued in Voyager in which the Borg Queen became less of a spokesperson and more their unofficial leader who developed an idiotic interest in Seven of Nine and a grudge against Janeway and the Voyager crew.

By eliminating the Borg Queen I feel a lot of idiotic-ness can be removed. Yeah some episodes would have to be seriously revised as it sometimes partly revolved around the character but I think it would be for the better. For one, no special interest in Seven (why would the Collective care about re assimilating one individual). And would we really miss such 'gems' as Unimatrix Zero and of course Endgame?

As for how conversation with the Borg in First Contact would have to be handled, well someone else on the internet came up with a pretty good idea; basically any verbal conversation switching from one drone to another as the main characters would move past them.
That is actually a lot more creepy too.

Generations.

Killing Kirk was gratuitous, pointless, and above all (like the film itself) badly done.

I don't like any of the TNG movies, although I loved the show. This movie ? Decanonize it now !

I liked First Contact despite its flaws but I agree, what was the point of this movie other than killing Kirk and getting rid of the Enterprise D. (not to mention killing of Picard's brother and nephew in the background, what a dick move)

Oh, I just had another though on something I would like to see changed.

"Benjamin Sisko is part Prophet"

When I for the first time saw this revelation in Deep Space Nine Season 7 I honestly hated it from the start, and it has not become any better over the years.

I can understand a storyline about Sisko having to find his connection back to the Prophet after the wormhole was closed or collapsed at the end of Season 6, and the Pah-Wraiths trying to stop him by making him believe that his life as a Starfleet officer and everything associated with it is just the illusion of a mental patient just to make him stop searching for that orb.

But the revelation that Sisko's mom was actually possessed by a Prophet at the time with the goal to have Sisko conceived? How much more did the writers/producers tried to turn Sisko into 'Bajoran Jesus'.

I feel it added nothing to the character and it even conceives the disturbing notion that the Prophets basically let a woman be raped. (I know Sisko's dad loved her but the real person wasn't in charge at the time, a Prophet was)

It was much better that Sisko was simply a human the Prophets had taken an interest in as he possessed a quality they found perhaps unique.

Just one very little minor thing- that holographic representation of "a human" the Borg Queen had up in VOY: Dark Frontier.
Which consisted of a human male... naked except for wearing a pair of Y-front undies.

Probably the most stupidiest and laughable thing I've ever seen on Star Trek

I get that obviously they couldn't just show a naked guy. But either film it so we only see him from the waist up, or just put some plain clothes on him. It's like the Borg Queen went "let's see this alien in all it's glory... but ooh no we don't wanna see his privates, gross, put some underpants on him!"

Agree with the above, plus

Bashir suddenly being a genetic superman

Wesley - Unnecessary

Excessive Technobabble- I would much prefer having a cleverly written solutions to a perplexing problem but resorting to a string to funny words continually save the day is a cheap gimmick.

IMO, the Xindi arc from Azati Prime to the end of Season 3 was some of the best stuff "Trek Prime" had done since the final arc on DS9

I disagree about Wesley, I feel once the show put him in uniform that the writers started writing him realistically he became tolerable. Unfortunately he was replaced with an angsty Wesley in his final appearance on TNG.

I would remove the TNG episodes where the ship was destroyed or stolen for really dumb reasons.

I also really would like to see episodes removed that involve time travel and basically end with the reset button being pushed and the time travel plot being pretty pointless.
If memory serves well Voyager and Enterprise had a couple of notorious ones.

I wouldn't have minded if the Borg Queen and the Hive were separate from the Collective. It might have been interesting if there were different types of cybernetic societies, each with different concepts and structures, competing for power in the Delta Quadrant.

i'd get rid of any mentions of money so everyone has to take picards word for it in first contact.

Agreed. Although I feel most instances can be explained away. Particularly those moments in TOS where Kirk tells Scotty he's just earned his pay for the month... I always thought of that as Kirk using a figure of speech that was in common usage but didn't really mean anything.

I'd remove STV. Spock shouldn't have a half brother and there shouldn't be mystical barrier to the centre of the galaxy aside from the event horizon of a supermassive blackhole.

Like the Kremim time weapon, I forsee such things as having undesirable side effects.

It would be absurd if the captain held back pay for individual crewmembers until he deemed they "earned" it, so it cannot be literally true.

:techman:

That sounds likely as the Decanonizer (wouldn't be my preferred spelling as a Brit though).

I would also probably remove most, but not all, of Enterprise too.

We had something of a similar thread almost a couple months ago:

http://www.trekbbs.com/showthread.php?t=270913

Let's see, off the top of my head, things I want to be able to decanonize:

The Borg Queen. Seems I'm not alone.

Wesley Crusher. Especially Wesley the super-powered human being. Though I'd just prefer a cannon.

The obscurity of the Ferengi early on. I just can't buy it.

The long disappearance of the Romulans. Also don't buy it.

"Star Trek: Voyager".

"Enterprise".

"Star Trek: Nemesis".

Most of "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine".

Pon far.

The impossible to cross Great Barrier.

Multiple episodes of TNG, such as "The Chase" and "Code of Honor".

I would Decanonate all mention, innuendo, hint or nascent mention of the Riker/Troi relationship. It was pointless and unnecessary. All the "Betazed" story elements could have stood (standed?) without the "relationship" and, all of the Riker angst and hesitancy to accept command of his own ship could have worked better if they were friends and she counseled him in that way. IMHO. I am not a Troi or Riker hater, just not a fan of the "relationship".

Oh, and the Beard.

And, of course, Wesley.

Sorry...and the Oil Creature From the Black Lagoon

Whoops!...and "Anti-Time"

Bits of dialogue: That's what I'd remove.

Conn officer in "Encounter At Farpoint": "Sir, we're picking up something on the detector circuit!" (Really? Gene was really reaching back into the 1960's with that line, wasn't he?)

Anything Troi said in "Encounter At Farpoint".

Picard in "Sins of the Father": "Commander, set course for the First City of the Klingon Imperial Empire!" (As opposed to.....what? The First Commune of the Klingon Proletarian Empire!"? )

Remove the suggestion that Data can't use contractions, because in EoF and some other episodes, he clearly could.
