Wooooooooo...

I'm drooling.

Any favorites?

I think I like the orthographic view of the design for the Enterprise F.

Cool. That one is mine :)

[edit] Dac's is the Defiant and Borg cube. I just PMed him, maybe we'll get him in here to scope out the others with us.

[edit] I submitted this angle too:

Note the cloaked Birds fo Prey.

I think I like all the entires, except maybe the two involving drydock. Not that they're of bad quality or anything, but it feels like EVERY YEAR we get a shot of the Enterprise in drydock.

I'm really digging the one with the Vor'cha. Mainly because that is one cool ship and has been seriously under-represented in these calendars. And on the shows in general, come to think of it.

I like the picture of the Romulan fleet. I'm curious as to whether David Mack will get any ideas from the photo of Kirk's Enterprise meeting Garret's ship, since he ultimately conceived the plot for the Destiny trilogy from a picture of the Columbia having crashed in the Gamma Quadrant.

I apologize as i do not want to sound like I'm purposefully being insulting, I truly am not trying to be.

I really do like the design, but I am something of a traditionalist. I just can not see it as a design for the Enterprise. I do really like the design for a Federation Starship though.

I did not notice the cloaked BOPs until you pointed them out to me.

Oh it's far from the first time I've heard that. No offense taken. I've also been told she's too similar to past Enterprises. Personally I agree with you. I think I was pushing the limits of uniqueness a bit too much. Tough balance to strike looking like an Enterprise, yet standing apart from the other competitors.

I really dig the giant model of Probert's Warbird, but I like that the other Romulan image tells more of a story with the fleet arriving at their new homeworld. I can see why they didn't want to chose between them.

Same with the two dry-dock images. I love the vanishing point effect around the TOS Enterprise, but the other one tells more of a story, and allows you to directly compare the design lineage.

I have another question for you though, I like to draw starships myself, but i am nowhere near that good. How did you learn to do that kind of art and what kind of books or software would you recommend?

I usually start with pencil and paper, then move to Autodesk Maya, and then to Photoshop. I've taken two years of classes in Maya, and still have a lot to learn. I'm self taught in Photoshop.

I noticed that some artists used ship models from other artists. How is that handled? Do they share the credits and money (was there even money involved?)?

^Thats a good question. I can solemnly swear the Defiant and Borg Cube meshes I used are my own. And obviously Fuzzy's is his design. A lot of others are model shots and original designs too - but yeah, some of those use publically available meshes. I wonder how that works too. I'd guess from CBS' perspective they wouldn't care, but i'd be kinda miffed if someone made money off my work.

There was a monetary prize. No one involved in the contest asked about whether I used other elements in my image, so it's up to the individual how they feel about using other people's models. Personally, I contacted the modelers whose work "headlined" my image (the refit-Enterprise alongside the TOS Connie in drydock) privately before the winning line-up went public and talked things over with them.

Anywho, since I'm here...

For what it's worth, I agree. Drydock pictures generally look good with Trek ships (which is part of the reason they've been so popular, I bet. Those complex curves and overlapping shapes just want to be surrounded by lights, which can be tough to justify in a space scene), but I understand that it can get a little excessive.

I submitted three of my favorite renders for consideration, and I was hoping for the one that wasn't a drydock shot to be picked (yes, I submitted two drydock shots. I would've probably sent in a third if the rules allowed JJ-verse stuff. I am part of the problem). The one that won was actually my least favorite, but I anticipated the judges might appreciate it more than I did since drydock shots are so popular and because of the way it puts the TOS and movie-era designs into the same context, while suggesting more of a story than the other two did, so it didn't blow my mind that it was the one that they wanted.

the single nacelled tos era ship looks interesting
two drydock pictures in the same calendar is boring

I don't know, the last few years the ships of he line calendars haven't really caught my attention that much for the most part. I appreciate the talent and skill it takes to do the work but not much of it as really stands out to me

It actually isn't that bad. If I'm correct, the second drydock image is actually the "centerfold" and therefore we won't be staring at that for a month.
