Doctor Who is on BitTorrent. But this time, it’s the BBC that has put it there.

The broadcaster’s BBC Worldwide division is releasing an official digital box-set of 10 episodes from its popular sci-fi show’s modern incarnation.

It will be distributed as a free “bundle” through BitTorrent’s file-sharing network, with an introductory video from current Doctor, Peter Capaldi, and a 10-minute preview of Rose, the first episode from the modern Doctor Who era.

Fans will be able to download or stream both, but will have to pay $12 to unlock the rest of the bundle, including the 10 episodes – strictly speaking 12, since a couple are two-parters.

Those episodes include Rose, The Empty Child / The Doctor Dances, The Girl in the Fireplace, Blink, The End of Time, The Vampires of Venice, The Doctor’s Wife, The Rings of Akhaten, The Day of the Doctor, and Listen.

Fans who pay will also get five more video introductions from Capaldi, and 2014 documentary Doctor Who: Earth Challenge which saw Capaldi and co-star Jenna Coleman travel the world meeting Who fans.

Well, that's one for the books…

Well done on making it Green.

Not entirely an odd pick of episodes, though I wonder about not having the Eleventh Hour as a better introduction to the Eleventh Doctor, though Vampires of Venice does present Rory to the group.

That is all of Moffat's RTD era episodes plus the first and last RTD era episodes.

Getting Day of the Doctor is something.

Rose - Naturally
The Empty Child / The Doctor Dances - Great
The Girl in the Fireplace - Did Moffat put this bundle together?
Blink - Great episode, but I'm seeing a pattern.
The End of Time - As good an inclusion as any.
The Vampires of Venice - I could live without this one.
The Doctor’s Wife - Standout episode.
The Rings of Akhaten - Counter example to make the rest look better?
The Day of the Doctor - Obviously.
Listen - Meh

As far as a greatest hits it doesn't quite land on the mark, not entirely sure why they would include some of the weaker/weakest episodes of the series in it even as just an introductory package though.

You are right, Rings is an odd addition. Maybe because of the music work in it, which is the best bit.

The second half of series 7 really kinda sucks a bit, it has its moments, but in a big rewatch recently I ground to a halt with it!

Surely this is just another way of trying to generate revenue, will it make any difference to the amount of illegal sharing, I have my doubts that it'll make a signfigant impact, but that's not a reason not to try.

I'm not sure that it's so much about illegal sharing as it as much easier way for the BBC to distribute it because they don't have to go to the cost of have the discs, package etc etc produced (so no dead stock if it doesn't sell).

And given the lower production & distribution costs they can sell it a lower price.

Very good point - as far as the end of physical media goes, well, the 21st century is when it all changes and the BBC has to be ready.

The fact a streaming future means fewer people willing to be financially rogered every year to get the latest Who boxset probably hasn't passed BBC Worldwide by.

Yup, that's obviously what they're doing. They know physical media is dead and they want to test the waters to see where they can gain the most profit / find alternatives to their own online service.
