Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

The set looked prettty generic to me, but I think I saw what might have been the circle pattern floor covering like what is on the bridge set, but white(?). Hard to tell, and my eyesight isn't what it used to be.

Is there documentation that this was a redress of the actual Trek set? I didn't see anything else that looked familiar.

Generic? Look at the vertical bracing holding up the upper floor. It's totally Klingon-angled. It looks like they pulled the shock-absorbers out and stuffed the set with contemporary dressing, but it's definitely the Trek set.

Yeah, it's definitely the torpedo bay set redressed. Heavily.

Ok, like I said. I don't see as well as I used to. That's why I asked.

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

...earlier in the episode they descend a narrow ladder and you can see the distinctive floor grating pattern of the torpedo bay set below (a nice comparison with Donny's overhead view upthread).

When?

You get a down view from the upper level at 29:37

I looked it up on Netflix. The Dailymotion video appears to be a syndication edit and is definitely missing the ladder scene I'm referring to. It would appear right at 27:28 on the Dailymotion video. It's definitely not supposed to be the same area that appeared later in the episode, but it's still clearly the torpedo bay.

Here's Donny's overhead render rotated 180 degrees with the section highlighted for comparison:

That's it, all right. It's weird seeing it in this state, all tattered and torn and messy. I know back then they didn't think it was a big deal, but this is a piece of Trek history we're talking about! Crazy.

I'm guessing the MacGyver pilot was filmed sometime in '84 or '85, after TSFS was released. This set went through a good bit. A K'tinga bridge, the Enterprise Torpedo Bay, the Bird of Prey bridge from TSFS, and then MacGyver. Wonder if it was ever used for anything else before they threw it in the trash?

My guess is that ladder clip is pretty close to what the set really looked like when the MacGyver production got to it. They shot that scene and then painted it white for the lab scene later in the episode.

The condition of the set reminds me of what the Stage 9 sets looked like in the Roddenberry intro to the 1986 home video release of "The Cage". Engineering was in particularly rough shape by that time, since it had basically gone unused since TWOK. Shane Johnson of Mr. Scott's Guide described his visit to the sets around this time, saying Engineering was used to store unused pieces from the other sets. He also mentioned that Kirk's quarters in TVH was being redressed into a 20th century apartment for the Gillian Taylor character but the scene was scrapped. I wonder what was supposed to take place there, and why redress Kirk's quarters of all places?

I find the redressing and reuse of sets and props endlessly fascinating, particularly those from Phase II / TMP that ended up being recycled over and over throughout the following Trek productions (especially TNG). I miss the TNG "Observations" articles over at Ex Astris Scientia; they seemed to fizzle out after S5 but they were great to compare how, say, the Phase II / TMP bridge was gradually redressed in TNG to where it was completely unrecognizable (e.g. it became a courtroom, various science labs, etc.).

Seeing these iconic sets in unrelated productions is even cooler because they're shot in completely different ways but still quite recognizable.

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Using whatever was on hand and making it look good on screen saves a lot of money and increases production value.
I love to show my friends the picture of Kirk and Keeler walking in front of Floyd's Barber Shop from Mayberry...

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Didn't the 'original' BoP bridge from TSFS reuse those weird overlapping oval doors built for the TOS Battlestar Galactica's Imperious Leader Chamber?

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

the Bird of Prey bridge from TSFS,

That's news to me.

The circular aft half of the torpedo bay was used as the Bird of Prey bridge in TSFS...

You can see through the door (which was the relocated airlock door frame from the torpedo bay) the forward half of the K'tinga/torpedo bay set...

Unrelated but interesting, the wall section in the centre of the above pic looks suspiciously close to the sections from 1701D engineering on the very left of this pic;

Actually, that wall in the Ent-D screencap above is from the TMP sickbay office, with the viewer hoods removed.

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

@Joe_Atari - good spotting the earlier scene!

@Donny - curious, which emergency drop-down door are you referring to?

And how I'm ignoring the fact that the drop-down emergency door seen in the TWOK Engineering set would be dropping down from the void of space...

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

He means the bulkhead that comes down during Khan's first attack, cutting the vertical intermix shaft off from the horizontal one (and that one unlucky cadet nearly gets crushed under):

That's the one! I'm actually pretty excited about implementing this emergency bulkhead into the build this time around.

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Oh that bulkhead drop-down door :)

Cool, but since it is coming down from the upper level, I don't think you'd have to worry about dealing with the cold, outside of space, because, well, there is an upper level :D

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

You're right. After doing some research with schematics last night, there does seem to be room for the door just aft of the upper chamber surrounding the intermix shaft.

Either way, the door will be functional.

Re: Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Very early shots of Engineering. Basically, I've got the entire bottom 7 levels of the vertical intermix chamber walls and floors complete so far. Love the way Unreal Engine 4 handles reflective metal surfaces.
