Shelby Miller had a no-hitter broken up after 9 2/3rds. :(

The no-hitter was broken up at like 88 pitches, too. Jesus Christ, Miller was dealing.

I can't state enough how much I enjoy Bryce Harper play baseball. He's everything promised and more. He's one of those rare talents, he's the guy you tell your grandchild that you got to watch him play.

Certainly seems to be living up to expectations. I wonder about Strasburg.

The Nats broadcast team showed a pretty disturbing metric a while ago showing how his average fastball speed has dropped every year he's been in the league. I think there is room for concern if you factor in his overall health as well. I don't think he is the feared power pitcher he once was.

The A's are 4-12 in the month of May. Goodbye Kazmir, Vogt, and maybe Sonny Grey. Looks like we missed our window.

Seems almost certain the Nats will not re-sign him which would have really boggled the mind a few years ago.

They should at least try switching Strasburg to reliever and/or closer.

He might be able to keep his arm a little healthier that way.

Word is that either tonight or tomorrow, Phil Coke is going to take a trip to a farm upstate where he can play with all the other shitty LOOGYs.

Nah, just Paul Maholm and James Russell.

This is about what most people figured would happen given Coke's performance. Sometimes you swing and miss on these guys.

According to Jeff Passan, Welington Castillo is a Mariner.

Holy shit, a 25-man roster with only two catchers. Trailblazing!

Here's hoping they got a good return. Plus, they could call up Schwarber and have 3 catchers again ;)

The actual rumor is, Schwarber is ticketed for LF soon since he's tearing it up in the minors.

I feel like if the Cubs thought Schwarber could even semi-adequately handle a corner outfield spot that this catching experiment doesn't happen, and from what I saw of Schwarber in the Midwest League last summer the catching experiment is not going well. (In fairness I haven't been able to see him this year so maybe he's taken strides defensively, but giving up 36 steals on 43 attempts this year doesn't tell me that he has.) In any event, I doubt Schwarber jumps straight from AA to the majors without spending some time seeing PCL pitching.

As for long-term projections, I have no idea where the Cubs can stash him. He has a tall but really stocky body type, which isn't something you really want in an outfielder, particularly since he's been gaining weight every year. The infield is already overcrowded so you can't put him at first or third, which leaves catcher ... where Miguel Montero is signed for three more years and he's been a beast thus far. At the same time, though, Schwarber's on-base skills are ridiculous; I'm really, really impressed with his selective approach at the plate. This is really one of those times where you wish the Cubs played in the AL.

As far as the selective approach of the team this year, it appears obvious when I'm watching a game, but they are seeing 9 pitches per game more than last year's average.

Is 9 a significant number? I would have thought it would be a much higher number.

It's not a hugely significant number but it needs to be looked at in context -- if last year's average was already high relative to the rest of the league, then it's just an improvement on an already good stat. I don't have those numbers in front of me, however, so it's impossible to say; as it stands it's just a number in a vacuum.

What is impressive is that the team is swinging a lot less at pitches outside the strike zone. Part of that is probably because they don't have Baez swinging at pitches out by the IKEA in Schaumburg, but it does speak to a more restrained approach, which is why the team is something like 2nd or 3rd in the NL in on-base percentage.

Shelby Miller got Mike Redmond fired. That's quite hysterical. No matter how bad the Braves get this year, they'll still be better than the Marlins.
