Series 9 Set Reports Thread (SPOILERS)

Is that who I think it is next to Jemma in the read through for 7&8?

He must have a grand arc in mind that only HE wants to execute and see resolved. After which I think the show will make another clean break, stylistically and narratively, 'ala Tennant to Smith regenerating.

Well there is no telling when Peter Capaldi would even want to step down from being the Doctor. He looks like he is having fun.

He's having fun with the role and being the Doctor, but I have heard that he found the shoot last year more exhausting and physically demanding than he expected. If he called it a day after series 9, I wouldn't be greatly surprised.

I don't really care how long people stick around as long as the stories are good. The Moffat/Smith years are my absolute favorite seasons of the show. I can watch them over and over.

Last year, however, I felt the show completely lacked direction. A lot of things were attempted that didn't really work out well in the execution.

But one mediocre series isn't enough to kill my interest. He could have something amazing up his sleeve for this coming series, and if he does, we might want him to stick around even longer. Anything is possible.

With all due respect, Smith's second series was way worse than the first. Or even third, for that matter.

I don't think that's true. I mean, series 6 wasn't perfect, and I personally think that The Silence are the worst NuWho enemies, but it had some good stuff. Especially The Doctor's Wife, The Girl Who Waited, Closing Time, A Good Man Goes to War and Let's Kill Hitler, not to mention A Christmas Carol, which is technically Series 6 and is one of my favorite Doctor Who stories period. It wasn't as good as series 5, but its good stuff was as good if not better than Series 7's good stuff, and no Series 6 episode was as bad as Nightmare in Silver or The Rings of Akhaten.

That said, Series 8 is easily the worst NuWho series by far, and I definitely think Moffat really should let someone else take over. He can still do good stuff, but the overall quality of his stuff is definitely trending downward.

Just to take this back to the actual subject again, they're off for another location shoot in the Canary Islands next week, to Fuerteventura this time.

(I'm guessing this means that really was Michelle Gomez who could be glimpsed next to Jemma Redgrave at the readthrough for 7 & 8.)

It's an opinion so it's neither true n or false, IMO Matt Smith's seasons got progressively worse. Capaldi was able to rise above some of the writing problems I think, but the show continues to have Moffat's impact and personality. A new showrunner might be beter and might be worse it's hardto tell at this point.

I do like the first part of series 6, and the individual, non-arc episodes were good. But the arc is so, so, so stupid, and the series finale is beyond underwhelming.

One bright spot about the Smith years, though, is the man himself. He's been consistently great, bringing great energy to even the most lacklustre episodes (Journey to the heart of the TARDIS, I'm looking at you), and being an all-around great actor for the part. So far, I think the show struggles to write for an elderly Smtih in a few certain occasions, which isn't right.

Hopefully, once Moffat leaves and Capaldi stays behind (please that be the case!), Capaldi will be given the free reign that he deserves.

The first part of Series 6 was first but the second half turned into a complete mess. It was the first time I'd ever actually been bored with NuWho.
