Osgood....we hardly knew ye

mythme

Commodore
Commodore
I just finished binge-watching season 8 (now I'm all caught up) and there's is just one thing that really saddened me with "Death In Heaven" and that's the murder of Osgood.

Sure we only saw her twice - this episode and "Day of the Doctor" - but I really wish she would have hung around just a little bit longer at least. Maybe because she was a little like a lot of us; the insecure loner, the intellegent geek and the Doctor uber-fan. I think the thing that dismayed me most was that #12, the Doctor who really doesn't want to attach himself to anyone, actually really seemed to want Osgood to be his companion and was genuinely hurt we he found her broken glasses to be all that was left of her.

Now because of the fact that she was a fan-girl, even wearing trappings of various doctors, it might haven gotten tiresome to have a long-term companion who would squee every time the Doctor complimented her. But she was SOOOOO hopefull when the Doc hinted that he might fulfill her dream, it made her murder all the more poinent. I guess that was the point. But still...they could have given the girl ONE flight in the Tardis at least.

There are those of us who hold out hope for dear Miss Osgood. It's possible that was Zygon-Osgood.

And if the matter is never-again addressed in Who, that will be how it shall rest with me.

Very heartbreaking.

She could've been used so much more in the future.

And yea, I agree, it's all the more heartbreaking, that she didn't even get a single trip :(

She would have probably gotten tiring quickly as a regular companion, and the best ones are the ones that are not fawning over the doctor. That said, they usually had a respect for him or a sense of awe sometimes and worked well.

She would have of course had the advantage of not being Clara.

It's Doctor Who for goodness sake! Definitely dead-and-gone-for-good-and-this-time-we-really-mean-it characters have come back to life with startling frequency.

I have this idea now that they should bring back Malcolm Taylor from "Planet of the Dead" but make him a bad guy. Have it turn out that he & Osgood were an item and he now blames the Doctor for failing to save her.

It seems like the Doctor should never make a casual offer to someone to be a companion in the middle of an adventure. They always end up dead. Osgood in "Death in Heaven." Victorian Clara in "The Snowmen." Rita in "The God Complex." Astrid Peth in "Voyage of the Damned." Kinda sorta Lynda-with-a-Y in "The Parting of the Ways." So far, the only one that has survived a mid-adventure offer like that was Courtney Woods in "The Caretaker" and the Doctor clearly didn't mean it, so that's probably what protected her.

Well, there is an obvious possibility for a follow-up plot in thinking through how the peace deal from Day of the Doctor will actually work out in practice, and how well it will hold if other ships arrive on Earth...
There is also a possible that the Doctor will be fine with dealing with an earlier version of someone who he knows is going to die, but Clara isn't...

I'm pretty certain Osgood's being resurrected. By now it should be obvious that Moffat doesn't keep anyone dead, unless they die of old age, are an actual historical person dead in real life, or Lorna Bucket. Since Osgood didn't die of old age, isn't someone historical, and isn't Lorna Bucket, her death will be undone.

Okay, I'll rephrase. Moffat only keeps someone dead if they die of old age, are a historical person, or belonged to the military church.

But seriously, only two characters from Moffat's episodes haven't been resurrected in some manner, and with it confirmed Osgood's returning people think he's going to keep her dead?

What is with people these days automatically thinking "prequel" when it's announced a dead character is returning? I remember prior to The Snowmen airing everyone was insisting Strax must have been from before A Good Man Goes to War, which it turned out he wasn't. Even outside of Who fandom, when Marvel announced Agent Coulson was going to be the lead of Agents of SHIELD everyone insisted the show must be a prequel to The Avengers, which it turned out was not the case.

Tropes being what they are, Osgood's back. I will be very surprised if indeed this episode is set prior to her death.

Can it be the Zygon if the host is dead? Probably not.

If we saw the human version die, did she actually die, or was it a transport beam similar to the one we saw at the end?

If it was a death ray, it must have been the Zygon, therefore the human was still alive.

Ergo, I demand that it may (or may not) be the human version of Osgood.

...and truth be told, when you've got a show where the main premise is time travel, even if she is dead, you can still use the character. You just have to set the stories before she died. Yes, that brings a raft of different problems, but just sayin'. Look at the story that introduced River Song.

With River it was set up that way when she was introduced. And River aside, the Doctor rarely meets anyone out of sequence. It has happened before River, yes, but again it's rare. Even in other Moffat episodes with all their time travel quirks it's rarely done. Hell hearing of the Brigadier's death apparently means the Doctor couldn't see him anymore, or couldn't until his resurrection as Cyber Brigadier.

See, even the actor who played the character is actually dead Moffat still resurrects the character. Anyone still doubt Osgood's being resurrected?
