Kate Mulgrew's Memoir "Born with Teeth".

Last edited:
Yes, I went. I'm thinking about moving. Lol. Dubuque is quaint and housed in the lovely bluffs of Iowa.

No, I didn't start it. A woman who sang at her wedding did.

She revealed she will be writing another book but didn't say when she will. I do remember shouting, "And we'll buy it!"

I'll write a report but I surmise the more ambitious ones will beat me to it :-) I'm busy selecting winners from my contest, overdue for personal reasons.

Edit: Yes, you can see me. Not my best angle. Lol.
Yes, that is Jenny.

PS. I was two hours early and I was happy that I saw Sam Mulgrew setting up the ballroom and lighting for the signing table. Fans dismissed me, "Yeah right. He wouldn't be setting up equipment.". Uh..just Janeway fans huh? They (Mulgrews) aren't above wanting to be normal. Lazy doesn't seem to be in their vocab. Later one turned and gasped in my direction mouthing, "You were right!"

Trivia: she refers to him as Sambo. Hehehehe.

Thanks, JanewayRulz for the link from the Cleveland newspaper. It appears that it was what we thought, their marriage took a toll thanks to their separate careers.

"The memoir stops at the moment she sees him again, and does not mention their marriage in 1999.

But though she did not write about the marriage, or their subsequent divorce, she has no problem talking about it. The divorce, she said, was the result of their careers taking them in separate directions too often.

When they got back together, she still had two seasons left of "Star Trek: Voyager." When that ended, she was often on the road.

"All the separations took a toll," she said. "No one was at fault. We are who we are. I was passionate about my career, and he was so important as a commissioner in Cleveland. He's rooted there, and I'm not sure I ever fully understood the depth of that or honored it."

It's a shame, she seemed so in love with him. :(

Catarina, thanks for telling us about your experience in Dubuque. The pics are great. I see that her sister Jenny was there, she was at the NY book signing too. I'm glad that you had a good time. :)

Don't move there yet, they had tornado warnings this week which makes it suspect in my book. ;)

Yeah Jenny and Kate look very similar in these photos, not so much in the one we had upthread.

I'll certainly be in line with you to buy the next installment, but I wonder what her theme will be in that one?

Yikes. Well, sadly I'm in tornado zone also. We were almost in the path of the ones which took out parts of Rockford, IL this month.
We researched it and unsurprisingly, it's very, very Catholic out there. Which we are not. I don't mind but they might :-) lol...

She didn't say. The suspense! :-)

My pleasure.
I think my favorite question was from Kate when her sister-in-law gave her a Kleenex which had been crumpled. ' it's looks a bit used don't you think?' She hesitated before using it as her in law reassures her. Hahaha. Candid family stuff.

I couldn't hear and my camera was full but someone stated Dubuque was a rather incestual bunch and that's where I can't recall where she was going with it. I just remember Kate was aghast because she thought she meant her family. the whole audience was like WTH and laughing.

Ah, the adobe flash did start working, so I can confirm this is half OitNB and half memoir related.

Here is that interview from Last Sunday's CBS Morning show I mentioned last week.

Kate talks OitNB and Voyager in LA.

The host was a bit unsure.

The Leonard Lopate radio show?

The dude doesn't know much about trek, does he.

Whoa... great interview with Kate about the book.

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2015/04/28/kate-mulgrew-bares-her-teeth.html

"Read some of the advanced press, [about the memoir] and you’ll find a fixation on the Orange Is the New Black actress’s surprisingly tumultuous life. You’ll find headlines about ..... You’ll find marveling over the difficulty—their words [the "advanced press' words] —about the life she’s led, and a coronation of Mulgrew as a survivor for having come out on the other side of it all.
“That’s not true at all,” Mulgrew says, insistent. “I’m a liver, not a survivor.” An urgency takes over her voice at this point. “I would appreciate it if you would quote that, because I don’t belong there. It’s not for me.” Then, with vigor: “I have loved my life, Kevin.”

In Kate's library.

JanewayRulz, thank you for the links. I just finished watching the podcast from the Free Library of Philadelphia. Kate was as entertaining as usual. :)

You're quite welcome. :mallory:

I know I missed the "livestream", but I can't get the archived event to load. Since it claims 6 people are currently watching the show I assume its "available" for viewing now.

Any suggestions?

I don't know. It's not working for me either. Maybe it's too soon. Give it a little time.

Well, I had to finish the rest of the Q&A at work since my connection kept "timing out" last night.

Argh.

I loved the young man, 3rd from last questioner, who thanked her for Voyager being such an inspiration for him through his tough period of coming out during college and freeing himself from an abusive relationship. He healed himself through the sport of cycling.

"I built a (cycling) team and I've been calling it Voyager. It's all about the journey, about the strength, about becoming stronger as you go, and I just want to say thank-you."

And of course I loved her response.

(I must add, personally, I've been the recipient of that smile and that laser focused attention and so I know just how he felt when she shined it upon him.)

"No, no I thank-you., because you understand what its all about, Love. Voyager is a metaphor. Right? This is a planet, called the planet Earth and we're all on it for a very limited period of time and all we have is one another... to lean on, to understand it, to get through it. And I think the fact that you embrace that philosophy is greatly to your credit."

"Thank-you."
