Anyone Here Work Or have Worked In A Science Field? Was Trek A Factor?

Re: Anyone Here Work Or have Worked In A Science Field? Was Trek A Fac

I'm not a scientist, but an engineer. My degree is in aerospace engineering, and I've done structural and systems design work on many aircraft and some spacecraft. And yes, Star Trek was a pretty big influence on me.

My dad was in the Air Force and later worked in aerospace. He didn't like Star Trek. :(
Back in the 70s, I showed my copy of the Star Fleet Technical Manual to a friend who was a scientist. He laughed his ass off at the technobabble in the illustrations, particularly 'anabolic protoplaser'.

Being in the science field for several years I can understand that. Your friend must have been a engineer. I worked with several engineers and most weren't like Scotty. I met quite a few arrogant ones that got pretty angry if a lowly geologist accidently upstaged them and figured out a solution to a problem first.:(

I've noticed that the vast majority of my chemistry/physics/astronomy teachers have been Star Trek fans. Their Power Points always consisted of inside jokes from the show.

Yeah same here. My teachers always mention star trek, star wars and even Indiana Jones. I think some were disappointed that real life wasn't as exciting.

I already had a Bachelors' in biology by the time I started watching Trek in the re-runs, so I'd say that Dr. Frankenstein (Colin Clive and Peter Cushing) was a bigger influence upon my career.

So, instead of going where no man has gone before, you're tampering with things that man must leave alone?

Well, yeah, their questing spirit in the face of orthodoxy. Making monsters is just a side track.

Have you created any creatures yet out of human body parts.

I hate to disappoint you, but ... no.

Without going into detail, I work as a scientist. I would not say that Star Trek directly influenced my path, but who's to say?

LOL to both of you. I was in art for a while when I first started college and when the professor told me she had to hold down 5 jobs to make a living I just took it for fun. Never tried the humanities. I was pretty good with numbers and science so I went that route. I now only work with numbers until I decide I want to go back and do geology.
I'd intended to get a bachelors degree, but when suddenly orphaned at 19, which was not legally an adult in those days, suddenly no home, etc., it interrupted school after my freshman year. Went back to school while married, got enough credits for the AA, then the divorce came and that was the end of school again. I was intending on a degree in education though would have preferred theatre arts, but there wasn't a theatre degree available. So things never went the way I planned. The way education got legislated by people who know nothing about education, probably just as well that didn't work out anyway.

Never to late to go back. I went back 2 years ago and will probably go back in another year to possibly get a advanced degree.

I got a Master's degree in my mid 50s. I agree
that it is never too late. My degree was in Biological Science and I worked hospital pharmacy for years. Star Trek didn't influence my job choice although I followed Trek from the beginning.

That's pretty cool. I will probably continue my education with another degree. Thinking of a masters in Accounting next but I may go back into science one day.

Re: Anyone Here Work Or have Worked In A Science Field? Was Trek A Fac

I did grow up with TNG so I think the technology had some subconscious influence on me studying computer science. But for the most part I was influenced by enjoying video games and wondering what made them tick. I got an associates in graphic design, worked that a couple years and am now finishing a bachelor's degree in CS in a few months. Sometimes I do feel like an odd one out not just doing the 4 years of CS right after high school.

I'm still inspired to keep learning by watching trek these days though. I'm into it more now than as a kid because now I have access to the entire series, as well as the internet to find out more background info.

I used to be in application development, and I would say that Spock and Scotty were influences on this.

I made a career change and now I am in more of a business setting, and I would say this work has been more influenced by "Mad Men" than "Star Trek."

Interesting that so many feel that Trek influenced their careers. For me, perhaps it is more in an indirect way. I would say that it was equal parts Dukes of Hazzard, BSG, Trek, The Brady Bunch, The Love Boat, Charlies Angels, Threes Company, Six Million Dollar Man, Hogans Heroes, Fantasy Island, Gilligan's Island, CHIPS and The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Show. And if you've seen all of those, you are about my age.

I seemed to have gone a similar route. I was a geologist for so many years and now I am in business.
