New Star Wars trailer

Khan 2.0

The new Wars trailer had a few similarities to the Trek trailers:

New Voice over of previous iconic lines from Nimoy/Hamill

End shock reveal of iconic character Nimoy/Ford

the Falcon going in the crash landed Stardestroyer being pursued by Ties - similar to the 'will fit! will fit!' scene of Kirk flying a Falcon like craft perused by Klingons that was in the STID trailers

And of course the Solo line was very similar to the end of Trek IV "My friends..we have come home"(be nice if there was something like that for the ST3 trailer involving Shatner on the Enterprise again... "Spock... we're home")

Aren't voiceovers of iconic lines by iconic characters and ships/planes/cars/people getting out of tight spots pretty much par for the course in most action-adventure franchise trailers? I don't really see much of a similarity there beyond generalities and common movie trailer tropes.

Well, it's a trailer. There are only so many variations.

I'm probably biased, but I think the the trailer for the '09 film was leagues above this Star Wars trailer. It was still good and goosebumps-inducing, but not as awesome ;)

Oh, and I think the weakest shot in that trailer was actually the first one; that crashed ISD didn't look as good as the CGI in the rest of the trailer.

yeah I noticed as well ...the will it fit thing. could jj be running out of ideas. hope not

I'm sure there are YouTube "critics" who are disappointed at having to reach beyond their one "lens flare" joke in order to generate some hits.

I think it's a bit of stretch to put a thread for the Star Wars trailers in a Trek film forum when the mentioned comparisons don't seem that similar to me at all, but your mileage may vary.

Having a "sting reveal" at the climax of a trailer is par for the course, as are quoting previous movies from a series. The Falcon flying through stuff is par for the course for Star Wars. So worrying about these generic similarities is as silly as scrutinizing action movie trailers because they feature car chases and explosions.

Pretty much.

I thought it more of a call-back to the Falcon flying through the Death Star being pursued by tie fighters in ROTJ.

Don't worry, there's a lot more of Abrams screw-ups to make jokes about other than just the "lens flares."

(even Abrams eventually admitted they were a mistake)

:)

Yeah, that guy couldn't make a successful film if he took an old franchise that was dormant, turned it on its head and make it a critical and financial success, revitalizing said franchise into a trilogy of films. Ha! Those youtube critics were sure to point out who needed to be fired for that blunder!

Anyway, it was just a generic trailer. Its connection to Star Trek is very tenuous at best, and by "at best" I mean "if you really stretch the idea as far as it can go, and then a little more to where it's more wishful thinking than reality."

And yet, you didn't make a joke about any those other things. Instead, it's just one more iteration of the same smug "Ha, ha, lens flares: Abrams admitted overdoing them!" gibe everyone has heard hundreds of times from people who feel that they're somehow scoring a point by mentioning it again.

What that does not come off as is a sincere attempt to participate in the discussion. Truth is, at this late date, it's nothing more than borderline trolling, and if that's the best you can bring, perhaps you ought to have opted not to post at all.

Please do better. I know you're capable of it.

:)

There are a lot of trailers that have similarities (e.g. teen slasher films, the big-budget actioners that have Hans Zimmer or Steve Jablonsky's music in the soundtrack). I think some similarities are 'seen' with the current "Star Wars" trailer and current "Trek" films because JJ Abrams directed all of them.

All I saw with the current "Star Wars" was awesomeness, and a tease that I'm probably going to get a movie that harks back - yes I used 'hark' - to what made "Star Wars" cool 32 years ago.

True. The one similarity between the ST 09 and SWVII trailers would be the car racing in the desert. Little kirk racing his uncles car and in the Star Wars VII trailer a unknown person racing some kind of vehicle in a desert passing a star destroyer(A very abrams scene)

 :techman:

The Star Wars trailer looks like fun, although I'm not much of a SW fan and am personally way more excited about Terminator Genisys and Batman V Superman.
