JJ hasn't let me down yet. If this fails it will be the only time he's made a dud, at least based on my experience. I know some people decided the movie would suck from the moment it was announced he was the director.
Some sci-fi and fantasy fans have a habit of doing that. Never mind the fact that the directors whom they like often make duds themselves.
I am a big fan of a lot of Abrams work, whether as a show runner for series (Fringe, Alias, Lost) or when he is doing it all (Super 8). I did think the Trek films were more Star Wars in spirit than Trek and for me his one dud was Into Darkness.
I think that he knows these characters and this universe very well and the chances are very good that this will be a great film. The only tiny speck of worry I have is that it might be too fanboyish, like the fourth season of Enterprise was, with too many "in" references.

A lot of stuff in the backgrounds reminded me of several of the Dark Horse Comics Star Wars stories set around the time of Dark Empire. Lots of wreckage from the war and new stuff being used that is similar to the old stuff.
What has me curious is just what happened and who all the Imperial like things belong. That is not the old Empire's symbol. The old Rebel Alliance symbol is seen on the X-wing pilots's helmet.

Supposedly the Empire never fell and reconstituted and became the First Order and became even more anti-Jedi.

From a pure entertainment and nostalgia perspective, I'll be very surprised if The Force Awakens is anything other than excellent. How it ends up fitting in with the rest, who knows?
Into Darkness falls apart towards the end, but that's probably more to do with the script than anything else. It would have been better off if they hadn't tried to shove in more Trek references and just let it be its own thing. It looked great, the cast was perfect, the pacing was quick, but the story fell short. I'm not sure how much of an input JJ had into the script though.
Well, I loved Into Darkness from beginning to end. Thoroughly entertaining romp. I think Abrams understands how to press my buttons.
According the props and costumes on display at Star Wars Celebration, those names are accurate.
I don't hate it, I just wished it had been better. They could have cut the entire Kirk death subplot or at least build up to it better and it would have been perfect. The movie just didn't feel like it earned that scene so it seems like it comes out of nowhere.

Or it didn't have to rehash the dialogue so much. What was meant to pay homage basically insulted the most revered scene in all of Trek. Have Kirk die, have him make a couple of references to the original dialogue without quoting them verbatim and the scene would have been much more effective.

I like Abrams. His Star Trek films definitely felt too much like Star Wars, but I liked the first one quite a bit in spite of the "I wish I were making a Star Wars film instead" feel of the movie. Into Darkness had some issues, but it was far from a disaster.
