Best battle scene in a novel

Movieguy12

Lieutenant Junior Grade
Red Shirt
Hello, I'm looking for the best battle scenes in a novel, preferably in the next gen, voyager, ds9 series eras.

Lots of shouting out commands, techi talk, coming up with solutions to problems, some sciency talk.

Thanks!

I´m not the battle expert as I prefer stories with focus on characters and plot. But the Destiny Trilogy leaves nothing to be desired as to action. You will like the Borg incursion and the following battles.

I own about 200 trek books and read most of them. I love character plots as well. But I'm actually looking for battle scenes with what I asked for a reason lol. Yes for a good read and some e excitement but also for a specific reason. I love the destiny books.

Mind sharing your cryptic "reason" or shall we assume this is a NSFW-type thing.

Lol maaaaaybe!!! Yeah I'm just writing a little fan fic for myself pertaining to my sto crew :). I wanted to just explain battle scenes better and the commands a captain might say or some crazy solution happen.

I absolutely love the battle(s) in Greater Than the Sum. The inventive tactics and the descriptions thereof were awesome, which is particularly impressive because I believe Mr. Bennett has said that isn't really his "thing," so to speak.

Thank you! I generally don't find battle scenes very engaging, so when I do write space battles, I try to make them creative exercises in problem-solving and imaginative tactics, because that's the only way to make them interesting to write.

Awesome!! I'll be sure to check it out asap!!

I'm not 100% sure which book it was in but there was an instance of Picard using the Enterprise D to ram the "neck" portion of a Romulan Warbird, with disastrous results...........for the Warbird.

Someone, I'm sure, will be able to place this scene in its proper context.

(Wonder if this was the inspiration for the ramming scene in "Nemesis"?)

Fairly sure that's one of the Reeves-Stevenses' books, perhaps with Shatner. I remember it because the scene had pretty good physics, an awareness of the kind of energies involved in a high-velocity collision, and that's generally an R-S trademark.

Profoundly unlikely. The film and TV creators rarely pay attention to the books. Plus, the Nemesis scene does not have the same kind of physics savvy as the book scene, treating the impact more like an oversized car crash.

If you wanna just have nothing but space battles, check out The Lost Fleet series. FTL travel only over long distance, so battles take light speed delays into account, but definitely interesting

I think this scene was in the novel Federation.

As an author of trek, how do you come up with techi solutions? I would be worried someone would try and debunk them. The one that I can think of at the top of my head is during generation. When the Bird of prey is firing on the enterprise and Riker asks worf if he knew anything about that class. Yada yada yada plasma could and ionic pulse. Data goes to a wall rips it open and messes with some stuff to create a ionic pulse that will trigger the defective coils which makes the bird of prey cloak or decloak can't remember and their shields go down. Giving the enterprise their opportunity.

^Well, I try not to make up random technobabble, but instead rely on my knowledge of physics and whatever research I need to do.

Awesome, I was never sure if authors make up something or actually have knowledge or do research in physics and go from there :).
